There’s a funny trend that’s been happening recently, and that has to do with ending franchises. Jurassic Park, a franchise that’s been standing strong since Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic, has just been slowly but steadily going down. I’m not a massive fan of the Park sequels, and the first two World movies are fine. Dominion, the last one that brought together the casts of all the previous films, was just plain bad. It was touted as the epic conclusion to the franchise, but here we are now three years later with a new one. Even though it wasn’t that great, Dominion still made money. However, there’s just a tiny bit of hope with Rebirth.

Rebirth is set five years after Jurassic World Dominion, where we follow Zora Bennett, a covert operations expert. She’s contracted to lead a team on a top-secret mission to Isla Nublar to secure genetic material. When Zora’s operation collides with a civilian family rattled by a boating accident, they all find themselves stranded on the island where they come face-to-face with a discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades. I do think that Jurassic Park/World has been needing a good reset for a while now, but if I’m being totally honest, I think this is a bit of a mixed bag. The biggest worry for me is the director, Gareth Edwards. I do enjoy Rogue One and his Godzilla movie from a decade ago, but he also made The Creator, which really did baffle me on how well-received it was outside of the cool visuals. Maybe that’s why they hired Edwards, especially since screenwriter David Koepp is returning to write for the franchise for the first time since The Lost World. I haven’t read the original Michael Crichton novel either, but a lot of inspiration is being pulled from what wasn’t used in the original movie. Either way, I do like the cast and I’m basically cautiously optimistic about this one. There’s a lot that just couldn’t click with me, but I always have to hope for a good movie. The potential is there.

The new ensemble for Rebirth includes Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers, the upcoming The Phoenician Scheme), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Fellow Travelers), Rupert Friend (Companion, Pride & Prejudice), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer, Widows), Luna Blaise (Manifest, Fresh Off the Boat), David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives, the upcoming Fear Street: Prom Queen), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Rebel Moon).

Jurassic World Rebirth is hitting theaters from Universal on July 2nd, 2025.
