Box Office Report: There’s A ‘Dog Man’ At The Top Of The Charts

Weekend Box Office Report: January 31st, 2025 to February 2nd, 2025

Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man started off strong at the box office this weekend with a first place debut of $36.00 million. The computer animated spin-off to 2017's Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie registered the twelfth largest unadjusted opening weekend ever for the month of January and the second largest January opening ever for an animated film (behind only the $41.28 million start of 2016's Kung Fu Panda 3). In comparison to previous films from DreamWorks Animation, Dog Man opened an impressive 50.9 percent ahead of the $23.85 million start of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie back in June of 2017, 20.0 percent higher than the $30.00 million start of Trolls Band Together in November of 2023 and even opened just ahead of the $35.79 million start of The Wild Robot this past September. Dog Man was directed by Peter Hastings and features the vocal talents of Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery and Isla Fisher.

Dog Man started out with $10.78 million on Friday (which included an estimated $1.36 million from Thursday preview shows that began at 2PM), increased a strong 41.0 percent on Saturday to take in $15.20 million and declined by 34.1 percent on Sunday to gross $10.02 million. The audience breakdown for Dog Man skewed 52 percent male, 48 percent female, 58 percent under the age of 25 and 42 percent over the age of 25. Dog Man has gone over fairly well with critics and looks to be going over even better with audiences after receiving a strong A rating on CinemaScore. The overall reception to the film should help transfer into good holding power for Dog Man in the weeks ahead. Internationally, Dog Man grossed $4.0 million this weekend from 30 select international markets. That brings the film's international total to $4.4 million and current global total to $40.4 million. Debuts by international market for Dog Man this weekend included $1.07 million in Spain, $0.67 million in Mexico and $0.59 million in Italy. This coming Friday (February 7), Dog Man will open in the United Kingdom.

Warner Bros. and New Line's Companion debuted in a distant second place with $9.30 million. The R-rated horror dark-comedy debuted in line with consensus expectations, which had tended to range from $8 million to $12 million heading into the weekend. While Companion didn't break out this weekend, Companion had a solid performance with the film's modest price-tag in mind. The opening weekend performance of Companion ended up in the same neighborhood as the $10.54 million start of Barbarian back in September of 2022 (BoulderLight Pictures is the production company behind both films). Barbarian had a lengthy run at the box office and the well-received Companion will hope to follow in those footsteps going forward. Companion was directed by Drew Hancock and stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid.

Companion began its run with $4.05 million on Friday (which included an estimated $1.70 million in preview grosses, $1.10 million of which came from Thursday preview shows that began at 3PM), declined an understandable 21.0 percent on Saturday to take in $3.20 million and decreased 35.9 percent on Sunday to gross $2.05 million. The audience breakdown for Companion skewed 54 percent male, 46 percent female, 18 percent under 25 and 82 percent over 25. Although the under 25 audience for Companion was fairly limited, it should be noted that a significant 51 percent of the film's audience was in the 25-34 age demo. Companion has gone over extremely well with critics and also looks to be going over well with audiences after receiving a B+ rating on CinemaScore (which is a very solid rating for a horror film). Internationally, Companion started out with a modest $5.3 million this weekend from 60 international markets. That places the film's global launch at $14.6 million. Debuts by international market for Companion this weekend included $0.92 million in the United Kingdom, $0.64 million in France and $0.44 million in Mexico. This coming Thursday (February 6), Companion will open in Brazil and Germany.

Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King placed in third with $6.30 million. Mufasa: The Lion King continued to display terrific holding power, as the film declined just 26.7 percent from last weekend. With a 45-day total domestic gross of $229.70 million, Mufasa: The Lion King has a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 6.49 to 1. Mufasa: The Lion King is now a slim $0.88 million behind the $230.58 million current domestic gross of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in the ongoing domestic battle between the two family films. Obviously, Mufasa: The Lion King will be overtaking Sonic the Hedgehog 3 domestically before much longer. Internationally, Mufasa: The Lion King grossed an estimated $11.7 million this weekend from 52 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $423.5 million and current global haul to $653.2 million.

Sony's One of Them Days also continued to hold up very nicely this weekend with a fourth place take of $5.88 million. That was down only 26.6 percent from last weekend's performance (when the film declined just 32.2 percent). With a healthy 17-day domestic total of $34.33 million, the current total gross to opening weekend ratio for the well-received One of Them Days already stands at 2.91 to 1. Expect One of Them Days to continue to hold up well going forward.

After debuting in first place last weekend, Lionsgate's Flight Risk was down four spots and a sizable 53.1 percent this weekend to land in fifth place with $5.43 million. The ten-day domestic total for Flight Risk stands at $20.74 million. Flight Risk hasn't gone over well with either critics or audiences, but the film did get a slight boost this weekend from the break in the NFL Playoffs, between last weekend's Conference Championship games and next weekend's Super Bowl LIX. With that in mind, Flight Risk is highly likely to experience another sizable decline next weekend.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney's Moana 2 claimed sixth and seventh place with respective weekend grosses of $3.26 million and $2.86 million. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 declined 38.7 percent from last weekend and Moana 2 decreased by 31.8 percent, as both films (as well as Mufasa: The Lion King) held up well given the new direct competition for family audiences from Dog Man. Respective total domestic grosses stand at $453.92 million for Moana 2 through 68 days and at $230.58 million for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 through 45 days. Internationally, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed an estimated $7.0 million this weekend from 65 international markets, which brings the film's international total to $232.0 million and global total to $462.6 million. Moana 2 grossed an estimated $4.3 million internationally this weekend from 52 international markets. Respective totals for Moana 2 stand at $582.9 million internationally and at a massive $1.037 billion globally.
