I’m going to have a lot of bias throughout this post, so bear with me on this. The Weeknd is probably one of my favorite working musicians right now, and I’ve been a fan of his since his Kiss Land album in 2013. It’s been insane to see him hit the point of being one of the most popular and best-selling artists of this decade so far, and now, he’s “killing off” The Weeknd. He’s said in recent interviews that after the release of his latest album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, “The Weeknd” is done, and from now on, all the things he does in the public eye will just be under his real name, Abel Tesfaye. However, even my favorite artist has a part of him that I just don’t like: his acting. It’s no secret that his first attempt into acting, the ill-fated HBO series The Idol, was a complete disaster. That being said, I was there every week for it. For some strange reason, I just couldn’t look away from the dumpster fire. Yes, The Weeknd’s got his flaws, but I have to at least respect his ambition. Now, he’s doubling down on a potential acting career with a tie-in movie to his final album.

We don’t know too much about the Hurry Up Tomorrow movie, but Lionsgate did release a little synopsis when the first look was released yesterday. The Weeknd actually plays himself here, or at least a fictional version of himself. He’s plagued by insomnia, and a mysterious stranger pulls him into an odyssey that begins to unravel his existence. Right off the bat, this looks much more interesting than The Idol. I do like that it’s going down the more surreal route with the visuals of the movie, especially since The Weeknd has leaned more and more trippy as his albums went on, with this new movie definitely pulling inspiration from the recent music videos he’s dropped too. I’m gonna keep gushing about this, so I’ll end this by saying that even if the movie is good or bad, I’ll be there opening night.

Hurry Up Tomorrow stars The Weeknd (credited as Abel Tesfaye, his real name), Jenna Ortega (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Wednesday), Barry Keoghan (Saltburn, Bird), and musician Gabby Barrett.

Lionsgate will release Hurry Up Tomorrow in theaters on May 16th, 2025.
