‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Trailer: Tom Hardy’s Anti-Hero Returns One Last Time
From Ryan Cordaro
It’s no secret that Sony has just been trying to throw out these Marvel movies to see what sticks. We all know what happened with Morbius released a few years back, and pretty much everyone trashed Madame Web, but this can all be traced to Tom Hardy. His Venom movie from 2018 was a surprise hit, and even its sequel Let There Be Carnage did pretty well for being released when the world was still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. Sure, they aren’t exactly masterpieces, but keeping to the comparison of movies like Morbius and Madame Web being reminders of what comic book movies used to be, the two Venom movies are in the same camp as the Joel Schumacher Batman movies: very goofy but watchable movies. Now, Sony’s hoping that they can get one more hit out of Venom with the closing film in its Venom trilogy.
Not too many plot details are out there right now, but the official synopsis for The Last Dance says that Eddie Brock and the symbiote Venom are on the run after being hunted down by their worlds. It does have the same tone to the last trailer, with Brock being pursued by a mysterious military group, but the surprise addition here is Knull, the God of the symbiotes that’s hunting Venom down. Knull being introduced so soon after he was introduced in the comics is interesting, but there’s already been a connection to the character in a previous Marvel movie, albeit in a different universe. The Necrosword, which was wielded by Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder, is a weapon created by Knull and was dubbed All-Black, the first symbiote. I doubt they’re going to connect them in that same way, but honestly, who knows what Sony are doing for this. Even compared to the other Spider-Man-less Spider-Man movies, I’ve had a soft spot for the Venom movies, so I think this could end up at least being a fun watch.
The Last Dance stars Tom Hardy (The Bikeriders, Mad Max: Fury Road), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the upcoming The Life of Chuck), Juno Temple (Ted Lasso, Fargo), Rhys Ifans (House of the Dragon, The Amazing Spider-Man), Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach (Legally Blonde, Euphoria), and Stephen Graham (Boiling Point, This is England).
Sony will release Venom: The Last Dance on October 25th, 2024. As an aside, its release date was recently moved up from November 8 so it wouldn’t overshadow the U.S. election. I’m serious, that was the reason.
