Swifties Invade Movie Theaters! Behind The Scenes Of Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour Film’ Announcement

It certainly wasn’t a cruel summer for music superstar Taylor Swift as her “The Eras Tour” grossed north of $1.4 billion in North American sales alone. What started as a mess of a launch back when pre-sale tickets were made available on Ticketmaster quickly became the most talked about (and most TikTok’d) concert in recent memory. Now, capitalizing on the unprecedented success, Swift is taking her concert to movie theaters nationwide on October 13th, 2023… and the film is already breaking records.

Filmed over the course of three nights at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium back in August, the 2 hour and 45 minute film is a surprise entry to the film landscape this fall, but that’s not stopping fans from flocking to it. According to Deadline, AMC, Regal Cinemas, and Cinemark are reporting advanced ticket sales of over $37 million… in just 24 hours… surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens tally of $20 million in one day back in 2015. It also scared Universal and Blumhouse into moving the release of The Exorcist: Believer a week earlier. So how did this all come together?

Interestingly enough, The Eras Tour Film isn’t riding into theaters via any Hollywood studios; unimpressed with negotiations, Mama and Papa Swift went straight to AMC CEO Adam Aron, via a mutual friend, and negotiated the October release of the $10-$20 million project. Of note, the original intent was to release the project in 2025, but the October debut allows for Swift’s wave of popularity and mainstream presence at the moment to be capitalized on.

At the end of the day, AMC is the distributor of the film while Variance Films is handling other venues such as Regal and Cinemark. Theaters showing the film will retain 43% of the gross, plus what’s made sales of all concessions and merchandise. AMC and the Swift empire will split the other 57%.

Tickets are now on sale for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Film, hitting theaters on October 13th, 2023 for at least four weeks.
