‘Superman’ Trailer: The New Era Of DC Begins
From Ryan Cordaro
It may be the fanboy in me, but I’m personally very excited for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s run at DC movies and shows. It’s kind of/sort of started already with the animated Creature Commandos series, which is fun enough. Even as a fan, I think that was a strange move to start off a mostly new universe with. However, I’ve got faith in Gunn, who’s pretty much knocked it out of the park with nearly every movie I’ve seen of his. Admittedly, I also remember being a tiny bit skeptical about him doing a Superman movie, mainly because his humor just doesn’t line up with a character like Superman. Just a few days ago, though, Gunn said that this is going to be different than something like Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad. There are two things that are trademarks of his that are either going to be lessened or not there at all: there’s very little soundtrack here, mainly being score-driven, and it’s not going to be a full-on comedy. Right when he said that, I knew that we were in for a treat with Superman.
Like most major superhero movies, not much is known about the plot for Superman just yet. Gunn has said that we’re being dropped into the action for the movie, not worrying about setting up any sort of universe. I do really like that approach to building out a world, just simply letting things happen without each movie feeding into each other. It really reminds me of what’s happening with Star Wars right now. Well, maybe not exactly in quality, but standalone stories that happen to be set in the same world. They’re still going to tell an overall story, with the Lanterns series on HBO apparently being the beginning of that story. On a more personal note, I live in Cleveland, where they filmed a majority of Superman, and seeing all of the city I’ve spent my life in get transformed into Metropolis is very surreal to see. It may be that bias, but I really think that this Superman is one of my most anticipated movies ever. Bring it on.
Superman’s massive ensemble cast stars David Corenswet (Twisters, Pearl), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the upcoming The Amateur), Nicholas Hoult (Nosferatu, Juror #2), Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones, Vacation), Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus, the upcoming The Last of Us), Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind, X-Men: First Class), Nathan Fillion (Castle, Skincare), Anthony Carrigan (Barry, Gotham), María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class, The Duel), Sara Sampaio (Carga, Shadow), Terence Rosemore (Outer Banks, Haunted Mansion), Wendell Pierce (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Wire), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Constantine, Lady in the Lake), Neva Howell (Burden, Run the Race), Beck Bennett (Saturday Night Live, The Mitchells vs. The Machines), Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy, Werewolves), Mikaela Hoover (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Suicide Squad), and Christopher McDonald.
Superman flies into theaters via Warner Bros. on July 11th, 2025, marking the first theatrical release for DC Studios.
