Steven Soderbergh is coming out of the gate swinging next year. Just next month, he’s got Presence, a new horror movie that’s being released by NEON. I’m pretty excited about that, but I don’t think I realized that he’s got two movies coming out in the span of three months. The last time I can think of a director this popular releasing two movies so quickly is Ridley Scott, when The Last Duel and House of Gucci released almost two months apart. As opposed to new Scott in some ways, I’m pretty much always open to new Soderbergh. Now, just two months after Presence releases, we’ll have Soderbergh’s return to the spy genre.

In Black Bag, we follow two legendary international spies George & Kathryn Woodhouse, husband and wife. George is tasked to weed out a traitor to the nation, and like always, he lets nothing get in the way of his work. When the main suspect is revealed to be Kathryn, George is faced with an ultimatum. What matters more to him: his loyalty to his country or his loyalty to his marriage? Stars Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender have worked with Soderbergh before, with their last projects with him being The Good German from 2006 and Haywire from 2011, respectively. Writing the script is David Koepp, his third collaboration with Soderbergh, as well as writing Jurassic Park, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, and the original Mission: Impossible movie. I’m such a sucker for a winding spy-centric thriller, especially one being done by one of the most versatile directors working right now, so I’ll 100% be there for this.

Black Bag stars Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings, Disclaimer*), Fassbender (Shame, The Killer), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Marisa Abela (Industry, Back to Black), Naomie Harris (28 Days Later, Moonlight), Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Mank), and Pierce Brosnan (The World is Not Enough, the upcoming Cliffhanger).

Focus Features will release Black Bag in theaters on March 14th, 2025.
