‘Saturday Night’ Trailer: Live From New York, It’s A Biopic!
From Ryan Cordaro
I feel like I’ve said this at the beginning for every post recently, but awards season is coming around the corner. We’ve been starting to get some trailers for the hopeful heavy hitters coming out by the end of the year, but with a lot of those comes a lot of underdogs, the ones that don’t exactly feel like Oscar favorites but could just build up momentum to get some nominations and even some wins. Even though there’s obviously no saying until the movie’s released, Jason Reitman could have a sleeper contender on his hands with Saturday Night.
Saturday Night is based on the true story of the first airing of Saturday Night Live, which at the time, was a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers that NBC was taking a huge risk on even giving them a live show. Egos clash, fires are set, and chaos ensues as we’ll see the 90-minute period that count down to the first time we heard “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” I’m a sucker for a good real-time movie, where how much time passes in a movie passes in real time for the characters. A good example of this is Money Monster with George Clooney, if you want a good idea for the concept. In terms of Saturday Night, I couldn’t believe that some sort of movie for this era of SNL wasn’t done yet, and I think it could be in good hands with Jason Reitman.
The massive ensemble cast includes Gabriel LaBelle (The Fabelmans, The Predator), Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), Rachel Sennott (Bottoms, Bodies Bodies Bodies), Dylan O'Brien (Fantasmas, The Maze Runner), Lamorne Morris (New Girl, Game Night), Cory Michael Smith (Gotham, May December), Ella Hunt (Dickinson, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1), Emily Fairn (Black Mirror: Demon 79, Mary & George), Kim Matula (Fighting with My Family), Matt Wood (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit), Nicholas Braun (Succession, Dream Scenario), Matthew Rhys (The Americans, IF), Jon Batiste (The Color Purple, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus), Finn Wolfhard (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Stranger Things), J. K. Simmons (Invincible, the upcoming Red One), and Willem Dafoe (Kinds of Kindness, the upcoming Nosferatu).
Saturday Night will be released in theaters from Sony on October 11th, 2024, the 49th anniversary of SNL’s first episode.
