Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) returns in a sequel to 2020’s Extraction that is bigger and bolder in every way: more action-packed, more explosive, more impressive in every way. Quite simply, Extraction 2 is a phenomenal follow-up.

In the sequel, Tyler Rake, somehow having survived the events of the last film, is tasked with rescuing the abused family of a Georgian crime lord from a prison. The first Extraction became an unexpected hit, a combination an action-packed film starring the beloved Hemsworth and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic largely contributing. To say that Extraction 2 is a better film altogether would be an understatement; everything about it tops the previous outing. Hemsworth is ruthless, his character beaten and battered both physically and emotionally, leading to some absolutely brutal kills. There is a charming subplot that isn’t overdone that addresses Rake’s familial background, brought on by his interactions with them family he risks it all to rescue. Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa return  here as well, both more dialed in and their characters captivating at every turn. Together with Hemsworth, they are an unrivaled action trio.

The action in Extraction 2 is simply jaw-dropping. The much-publicized 21-minute sequence is absolutely stellar and largely sets the pace for the rest of the film. Sam Hargrave simply understands how to present invasive action choreography that never allows for a dull moment. The camera movement is impressively controlled, yet unique, guiding the audience along and forcing focus where the filmmaker intends. Knives, guns, helicopters, RPGs, nails, barbells, glass… it’s all used here and had me on the edge of my seat.

It’s between this and John Wick: Chapter 4 at this point for the best action film of the year. Joe Russo’s script is tight, effective, and aims to grow the franchise without sacrificing the film in front of him. Bring on more of Tyler Rake, the high intensity action that never lets up, and incredible performance by Chris Hemsworth. This is Netflix’s best original series, hands down. One of my favorite movies of the year, no question.

Extraction 2 hits Netflix on Friday, June 16th, 2023.
