San Diego Comic Con has been underway since Thursday, and there have been a good amount of little nuggets coming out recently. Marvel’s and DC’s Hall H panels are both on Saturday night back-to-back, and I’m expecting both to have some fun announcements, whether it’s trailers or overall new castings and new projects in general. So, seeing this trailer drop today of all days was a fun surprise, especially since it’s ushering in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s era of DC projects.

There aren’t a lot of plot details out there for the new DC animated series, but I think I can potentially put some pieces together while taking into consideration what’s going to be “loosely canon” from Gunn himself, and that’s The Suicide Squad and the first season of Peacemaker. Amanda Waller’s in hot water after putting humans in danger for her covert operations with the Suicide Squad, so she decides to not put any human lives in danger because of her team and just use monsters. Gunn wrote all seven episodes of the series, with the animation being done by French studio Bobbypills. Gunn has said that describes the series as putting a gothic spin on war films from the 1960s, the Universal monster movies, and manga Golgo 13.

The voice cast includes Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Copshop), David Harbour (Stranger Things, the upcoming Thunderbolts*), Maria Bakalova (Bodies Bodies Bodies, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Indira Varma (The Legend of Vox Machina, the upcoming Mission – Impossible 8), Zoë Chao (The Afterparty, the upcoming Nightbitch), Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Resident Alien), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, the upcoming Superman), Steve Agee (Peacemaker, The Suicide Squad), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher, the upcoming Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas) and Viola Davis (Kung Fu Panda 4, The Woman King). If they were ever to jump into live-action material, all of these actors are set to play their respective characters, the first of which being Grillo, who is set to be in both season 2 of Peacemaker and Superman in a small role.

Creature Commandos, the soft launch of the DCU, will release this December on Max. As of right now, it’s unknown if Creature Commandos will be a weekly drop or all episodes will be dropped on the same day.
