I do love a good marketing strategy. One of the more memorable ones from this decade so far is Barbarian, Zach Cregger’s directorial debut that marketed it as one of those horror movies where an AirBnB is double-booked, but one of them is acting suspicious. It was the only trailer released for that movie, and when I went to see it in theaters, I was blown away at what Barbarian actually ended up being. I won’t spoil it here, but even though I don't care for the movie, it made my jaw drop at what the movie actually was. I had heard the same thing about Companion, a new horror movie which only had one small teaser and is said to be a new take on love from the studio behind The Notebook. The thought did cross my mind of this being the only trailer released for the movie, especially since the movie was supposed to come out this week before being delayed. I guess I ended up being wrong, since we now have a new trailer for Companion.

Warner Bros., who’s releasing this movie with New Line, hasn’t actually released an official synopsis for Companion, but if I’m being honest, I think this is a major example of a trailer showing way too much, especially for a movie that had such an interesting teaser. Cregger is a producer on this, whose debut film Barbarian ended up being an interesting watch, even if it wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m gonna stay vague on what Companion is about, but if you want to know the gist, the trailer is linked below. Companion follows Iris, a woman who’s being held captive by her boyfriend and decides to kill him and escape. That’s really all I can say without spoiling, but as with Barbarian, I’m sure there’s going to be a lot more in store. I just have to hope they didn’t spoil the entire movie in this trailer.

Companion stars Sophie Thatcher (Heretic, Yellowjackets), Jack Quaid (The Boys, the upcoming Novocaine), Lukas Gage (Smile 2, Euphoria), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside, Never Have I Ever), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows, the upcoming The Life of Chuck), and Rupert Friend (Canary Blacki, the upcoming The Phoenician Scheme).

Warner Bros. and New Line are releasing Companion on January 31st, 2025.
