Emmy Nomination Reactions

Another year of Emmy Nominations have been announced and there is another year of snubs and surprises and yet mostly everything was fairly predictable but also quite deserved.

Most of the nominations in the Drama categories were expected. However, it is very strange that House of the Dragon and Andor received Best Drama Series nominations and yet they received no performance nominations. Andor deserved a few nominations for Diego Luna and Stellan Skarsgard but they were unfortunately long shots. However, House of the Dragon losing out nominations for Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy were very surprising and while Paddy Considine was a long shot it was a shame that he missed out on the nomination.

The Crown grabbed a series nomination and an expected nomination for Elizabeth Debciki’s stunning portrayal of Princess Diana, but it definitely underperformed with no other performance nominations including a very surprising snub for Imelda Staunton in Best Actress. However, it was great to see Keri Russell get in on a long shot nomination from The Diplomat and the complete nomination surprise for Sharon Horgan in Bad Sisters

The White Lotus was once again underestimated in the supporting performance categories. Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, F Murray Abraham, and Meghan Fahy all received their expected nominations but then it over performed with Theo James, Michael Imperioli, Will Sharpe, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Simona Tabasco all receiving surprise nominations. Alan Ruck finally got his nomination for Succession as well as that getting the most nominations which will definitely predict its very easy dominance.

In the Comedy categories the biggest surprise was definitely Jury Duty grabbing a long shot nomination for series and James Marsden getting nominated for playing himself. Wednesday was always going to get its nomination for Jenna Ortega in Best Actress but it was quite the surprise to see it in Best Comedy Series as well, especially taking out the frequent flier of What We Do in the Shadows and the hot newcomer Poker Face, which was a bit of long shot in retrospect.

Jason Segel was definitely getting rumblings for his performance in Shrinking but him grabbing a nomination over Steve Martin for Only Murders in the Building was a tremendous surprise especially considering Steve Martin and Martin Short always seemed like a package deal. Shrinking was full of surprises with a much deserved yet unexpected nomination for Jessica Williams and an even more unexpected snub with Harrison Ford losing out on a supporting nomination. Selena Gomez meanwhile continues getting snubbed by the Emmys for her deserving performance in Only Murders in the Building

Sarah Goldberg was unsurprisingly and unfortunately snubbed for her supporting performance in Barry for the second year in a row. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel continued to give nominations to Alex Borstien, Rachel Brosnahan, and the series but a snub for Tony Shaloub which shows the show having a bit of a lag in popularity.

Ted Lasso got the expected nominations it usually gets including a huge and deserved nomination for Phil Dunster, with The Bear also scoring big in several nominations. Abbott Elementary had a great showing but still didn’t get the much deserved nomination for Lisa Ann Walter.

Much like last year, the Limited Series category had the most snubs and surprises especially Black Bird which garnered several performance nominations and was expected to be a top prospect in the Limited Series category but wasn't nominated in place of the inexplicable nomination for Obi-Wan Kenobi that received little to no buzz and also received no other over the line nominations.

Welcome to Chippendales overperformed like crazy in the performance categories. There was an expected nomination for Murray Bartlett but Kumail Nanjiani, Annaleigh Ashford, and Juliette Lewis all received surprising nominations for their performances. Tiny Beautiful Things was barely getting any buzz but Kathryn Hahn and Merritt Wever are no stranger to the Emmys and therefore both led to some surprising nominations. Elizabeth Olsen was all but cemented in a nomination for her performance in Love and Death but instead was snubbed while her co-star Jesse Plemmons was on the fence and ended up getting in.

Olivia Colman has proven that she won't be nominated for every performance by missing a nomination for an otherwise unheard of Great Expectations. Lena Heady in White House Plumbers, Ashley Park in Beef, and Cherry Jones in Five Days at Memorial were also expected nominations that did not pay off due to the Chippendales ladies, but were not by any chance locks. The Patient lost quite a bit of momentum by the time nominations came out and yet Domhnall Gleeson was still expected to be recognized for his showy performance and yet was also snubbed.

These were just simply the snubs and surprises this year, there are still plenty of other narratives that will be explored when my predictions will be released in a few months.
