I know what the headline says. It’s the first DC Studios movie, but that’s not the point of the post. I recently watched all of the Superman movies that starred Christopher Reeve, and of course there are the ones that people don't love, but especially with the first film, I was practically kicking myself for not watching them sooner. Every movie in there, including The Quest for Peace, all felt elevated by Reeve and his portrayal of the Man of Steel, but I also didn’t really know about his life outside of the basic details. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is set to tell this story and bring it to a whole new generation.

Super/Man, as the title says, will be telling the story of actor and activist Christopher Reeve, with a main focus on his life following a horse riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. It premiered at Sundance back in January to widespread praise, and after an intense bidding war, Warner Bros. picked it up with HBO Documentaries, CNN Films, and DC Studios to release it. How it wasn’t being released by WB in the first place baffles me, but I suppose that’s how the industry is. Either way, I was practically crying watching the three-and-a-half minute trailer below, so I bet the documentary itself is going to be a great watch.

Super/Man is directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, who directed Rising Phoenix, a documentary about the Paralympic Games. Bonhôte also directed McQueen, a documentary about the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Featured speakers in Super/Man outside of Reeve’s children, Will, Amanda, and Matthew Reeve, include Susan Sarandon, Jeff Bridges, Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Close, and former U.S. secretary of state John Kerry.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story will be released in theaters as a Fathom Events special screening on September 21st, 2024. An encore screening will be on September 25, which would’ve been Reeve’s 72nd birthday. It will stream on Max, where it’s expected to land later this year.
