There are a lot of classic movies from the 1980s that I just haven’t gotten around to, and Road House with Patrick Swayze is one of them. It’s not exactly that I’ve been avoiding it, but there are other 80s “classics” that were higher up on the list for me that I’ve been wanting to see. I remember when the remake was first announced, and unlike a lot of remake announcements, I didn’t see that many comments about “why are they remaking Road House?” or anything along those lines. Maybe this isn’t one that’s sacrilegious to remake like Back to the Future. Plus, the director attached is Doug Liman, who’s made some damn good action movies like Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Edge of Tomorrow. I’m not a personal fan of the Bourne franchise, but he directed The Bourne Identity as well.

In this remake, none other than Jake Gyllenhaal (The Covenant, Nightcrawler) takes the lead role in place of Swayze. A new element of this is the use of UFC in the film. Gyllenhaal plays a former UFC middleweight fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, where he finds out that this paradise isn’t all that it seems. It’s worth noting that this movie made headlines that MGM wouldn’t give this a theatrical release and send it straight to Prime Video, even after they promised 12-15 theatrical releases yearly. Doug Liman has since said that he’s boycotting the film’s premiere.

Alongside Gyllenhaal, Road House stars Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die, Lift), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Arturo Castro (The Menu, Entergalactic), Jessica Williams (the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Booksmart), Darren Barnet (Anyone But You, Gran Turismo), Travis Van Winkle (Transformers, Friday the 13th), JD Pardo (Mayans M.C., Hypnotic), Lukas Gage (Fargo, Euphoria), Beau Knapp (The Nice Guys, the upcoming The Bikeriders), and UFC fighter Conor McGregor in his film debut.

Road House hits Prime Video on March 21st, 2024.
