‘Mickey 17’ Trailer: Bong Joon-ho Returns With Multiple Robert Pattinsons
From Ryan Cordaro
For me, this movie felt like a long time coming. I may not be the only person with this experience, but my first exposure to international films outside of the U.S. was Parasite, Bong Joon-ho’s last film that made history by becoming the first non-English language movie to win Best Picture at the Oscars, as well as winning Best Director and Original Screenplay, all by Joon-ho as well. I’m not exactly sure if Parasite was the movie to break down the barrier to watch other movies, or simply going to film school did it, but I’d be surprised if Parasite winning Best Picture didn’t open at least some people’s eyes to non-English films. Naturally, I’ve been sitting and waiting for whatever Joon-ho would do up next, and with every little bit of news we got, it got more and more exciting. Now, after some delays and even getting taken off of the schedule entirely, we now have the first look at Mickey 17, Joon-ho’s return to the big screen.
Based on the book Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, Robert Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, an Expendable. His job is to be a disposable employee during an expedition to colonize the ice planet Niflheim, the one that will go on borderline suicidal missions to make sure that this planet is livable for humanity. When he dies, a new Mickey is regenerated with most of his memories intact. The rest of the plot is up in the air, but things start to go haywire when the most recent Mickey ends up discovering that the last one survived his last mission. I genuinely love the tone of the trailer, almost setting it up to be an sci-fi adventure, which is not the tone I was expecting based on the synopsis and the casting of Pattinson. Either way, it’s wonderful to see Joon-ho back with a new project, especially since it’s coming out in the usually quiet movies that release at the beginning of the year.
Mickey 17 stars Pattinson (The Batman, The Boy and The Heron), Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice, I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Steven Yeun (Minari, Nope), Toni Collette (Hereditary, the upcoming Juror #2), and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things, Spotlight).
Warner Bros. will release Mickey 17 into theaters on January 31th, 2025.
