Watching the U.S.A. go to war with Russia feels like a cliché, but we’ve gotten some great movies out of it. The Hunt for Red October, Red Dawn, even Rocky IV could be slid into this category. Now, we have I.S.S., a new thriller set on the International Space Station. When war breaks out below on Earth, a group of astronauts living on the station are told to take control of the I.S.S. from cosmonauts also living on the station, no matter what the cost.

I.S.S. is directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, who recently directed the Jason Segel-starring Our Friend and also directed, produced, wrote, and edited Blackfish, a documentary focusing on the controversy that surrounded SeaWorld and its treatment of Tilikum, an orca they held in captivity in their Orlando location. The script for I.S.S. is written by first time writer Nick Shafir, which was one of the selections of the 2020 Black List, an annual survey that selects the most-liked screenplays that haven’t been produced yet. Just for fun, other films in that year’s list include Antoine Fuqua’s Emancipation, Scott Derrickson’s next film The Gorge, and Todd Haynes’s controversial dramedy May December.

I.S.S. stars Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Wish), Chris Messina (Air, Birds of Prey), John Gallagher, Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane, Hush), Maria Mashkova (For All Mankind), Costa Ronin (The Americans, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Pilou Asbæk (Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, Uncharted).

I.S.S. hits theaters via Bleecker Street on January 19th, 2024.
