‘I Saw The TV Glow’: Jane Schoenbrun Brings Their Micro-Budget Horror To a New Scale - Trailer
From Ryan Cordaro
Like I assume most of you know, A24 has gained something similar to a cult following over the past couple of years. Even though I may be a member of said following, I can’t say that their reputation isn’t unearned. Their brand of indie filmmaking is so widespread at this point that the term “A24-inspired” is actually starting to catch on. Of course, they still have their brand of horror/thrillers on the way, and the studio’s even dipping into a full-on action/thriller with Alex Garland’s Civil War coming out in just a few weeks. However, that’s not to say that they still have their brand of off-kilter horror ready to go. Even with that in mind, it’s hard to put this specific movie in a box just based off this trailer alone, which is the best mindset to go into with any sort of movie.
I Saw The TV Glow follows Owen, a teenager who’s just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show titled The Pink Opaque, which is a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack. Writer-director Jane Schoenbrun’s previous movie, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, is one of my personal favorite movies ever, and even with trying my best to take out my own personal bias, it’s tough to say that I can even think of any similar movies to it. Emma Stone, fresh off her Oscar-winning performance in Poor Things, is attached as a producer with her husband Dave McCary under their Fruit Tree banner, and an accompanying soundtrack for the film is on the way, with most of the performers actually appearing in the film as themselves.
I Saw The TV Glow stars Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the Jurassic World franchise), Brigette Lundy-Paine (Bill & Ted Face the Music, The Glass Castle), Ian Foreman (Let the Right One In, Exhibiting Forgiveness), Helena Howard (The Wilds, Madeline’s Madeline), Fred Durst (yes, that Fred Durst), Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Crush), Lindsey Jordan (also known as Snail Mail), Conner O’Malley (Palm Springs, Bodies Bodies Bodies), Emma Portner (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), and Danielle Deadwyler (TILL, Station Eleven). The movie also includes appearances from musicians Phoebe Bridgers, Sloppy Jane, and Kristina Esfandiari.
I Saw The TV Glow will be released in theaters on May 3rd, 2024.
