The not-so-sudden resurgence of Kevin Costner honestly felt like it’d build up to something. I’ve only seen a few episodes of Yellowstone, the Taylor Sheridan phenomenon that stars Costner, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen of it. I should at least say, though, that Costner made headlines when he dropped out of Yellowstone, deciding to not return for the final season. In his place, Matthew McConaughey leads a sequel/spin-off show. This project, Horizon, has been in the works since the 1980s, and I suppose when Costner realized that he could actually make this, he dropped everything and went for it. I have to respect the move, even if it means dropping out as the lead of one of the popular shows airing right now.

Led by Costner on the script, as the director, and on the screen, Horizon: An American Saga is going to be a massive, four-part series of movies, with each movie covering a section of the Civil War. It’s admittedly an ambitious project, and while I’m personally not the biggest fan of westerns in general, I love ambition when it comes to any sort of movie. Even if westerns really aren’t as popular these days anymore, the fact that there’s still someone wanting to make really anything as ambitious, especially one that’s reported to be over 12 hours long with all four movies, is something that’s getting me pretty excited about it.

Along with Costner himself, all four chapters will star Sienna Miller (American Sniper, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Sam Worthington (the Avatar franchise, Terminator Salvation), Giovanni Ribisi (Waco: The Aftermath, the Avatar franchise), Jena Malone (Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, the upcoming Love Lies Bleeding), Abbey Lee (Old, Mad Max: Fury Road), Michael Rooker (the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Fast X), Danny Huston (Consecration, The Aviator), Luke Wilson (Fingernails, Bottle Rocket), Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan, The Hunger Games), Jeff Fahey (Lost, Alita: Battle Angel), Will Patton (Silo, Halloween), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon, Echo), Owen Crow Shoe (Joe Pickett, The Revenant), Ella Hunt (Anna and the Apocalypse, Dickinson), and Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things, the Twilight franchise), among many others.

The first two chapters of Horizon: An American Saga are both set to release this coming summer, with Chapter One hitting theaters on June 28th, 2024 and Chapter Two on August 16th, 2024.
