Early Predictions for the Best Actor Race at the Oscars

Unlike the Best Actor race, there are numerous prospects for Best Actress nominees, but without a clear front runner at this point there are still many options that could potentially take the top prize.

Amy Adams has not been nominated in six years and, with the exception of starring in a film based on living room erotic literature, has not been considered in any buzzworthy films. However, this year she is starring in Nightbitch, directed by Marielle Heller who has brought nominations to Tom Hanks for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me. Therefore, with the combination of Amy Adams being more than due and Heller leading to nomination success in the past, this could all lead to her nomination with the one thing holding back is a movie title that could turn off older generations of Academy voters.

Saoirse Ronan is bound to have a great year. She has a starring role in Steve McQueen’s new film Blitz, but this could potentially be considered a supporting role. She is also in a lesser known film entitled Outrun where she plays someone suffering from addiction. She may not get two nominations, but could get a nomination in honor of having such a great year. She is also someone who, like Adams, is very much due.

One of the most talked about performances coming out of Cannes is Mikey Madison from Sean Baker’s film, Anora. This film seems like a showcase for Madison, someone who had been a supporting character for several years now; this is her big moment to shine and she seems to be making the best of it.

The last time Marianne Jean-Baptiste was nominated for an Oscar it was in the Mike Leigh film Secrets and Lies in 1996. The actor and director are once again teaming up for the film Hard Truths and Leigh usually spells Oscar; their reunion could be just the reason for Jean-Baptiste to get another nomination.

Lady Gaga is already campaigning for her role in Joker: Folie à Deux which is both a good and a bad thing in that she sometimes does a bit too much and ends up annoying the public instead of getting the attention for an Oscar nomination. That’s exactly what happened with House of Gucci. It’s still difficult to see if the Joker sequel could be taken seriously by awards bodies and if Lady Gaga’s role will be in lead or supporting, but a nomination is still very possible.

Karla Sofia Gascon has the chance to make history as the first transgender woman to be nominated for an Oscar. The jury is still out on whether the Academy could be that open-minded. Her performance in Emilia Perez is getting a lot of positive attention, but it will still be interesting to see how such a radical film will be received.

The narrative of Demi Moore making a comeback is way too sweet to ignore and her starring role in The Substance is getting a great deal of positive attention. However, this movie is in the specific subgenre of body horror and that type of movie rarely even gets noticed by the Academy.

June Squibb has been campaigning for her role in Thelma and has been an absolute delight in every interview. She is also a legendary actress and earned the nomination with an incredibly sweet performance that was responsible for the wholesome nature of the film. Her nomination is a long shot as the film has been flying under the radar and it’s already been released with a long time until nominations, so that could be a hindrance to her being recognized.

Pablo Lorrain has directed both Jackie and Spencer, two films about iconic women, and both led to nominations for the performances of those playing the respective women. He is now making a movie entitled Maria about famous singer Maria Callas and Angelina Jolie will be playing her, so based on the previous pattern of Lorrain films and Jolie having what could be considered a comeback with this film, it’s difficult to ignore a nomination for her.

His Three Daughters is another film with a cast that is full of people that genuinely deserve plenty of Oscar nominations by now and Natasha Lyonne, who has deserved a nomination for a great deal of time, is leading the film.

Like all of these articles, things are bound to change in the coming months, but these are the likeliest performers to be nominated for Best Actress.
