‘Dog Man’ Trailer: Dav Pilkey’s Other Best-Selling Series Leaps Onto The Screen
From Ryan Cordaro
When I saw what this was, I had an immediate thought pop into my head: Of course this is from the same writer as Captain Underpants. It’s a very strange idea and definitely feels like something I would’ve liked as a kid, but why I don’t think I read them was because they were starting right when I stopped reading Captain Underpants. I didn’t even entirely know what this thing was until this trailer dropped, but I do enjoy the clips I’ve seen of the Captain Underpants movie, so maybe this could be up my alley too.
Dog Man follows a police officer and his canine partner that are injured on the job. To save their lives, an insane but life-saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born. Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve, as well as fetch, sit and roll over. Now, he must stop the pretty evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat. In the terms of the books, Dog Man is actually a story-within-a-story type, being a creation from George and Harold from the Captain Underpants books. I think while I may not check it out in theaters, it definitely has that very quirky, campy energy that I did grow up enjoying, so Dog Man could be fun for the whole family, and a good throwback for me, personally.
The voice cast for Dog Man includes Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live, The King of Staten Island), Lil Rel Howery (Free Guy, Get Out), Isla Fisher (Rango, the upcoming Now You See Me 3), Poppy Liu (Hacks, Dead Ringers), Stephen Root (Barry, Office Space), Billy Boyd (The Lord of the Rings, Seed of Chucky), and Ricky Gervais (The Office, Night at the Museum).
Dog Man releases in theaters on January 31th, 2025 via Universal Pictures.
