‘Despicable Me 4’: First Trailer Pits Gru Against Will Ferrell’s New Villain - Trailer

I’ve always been a fan of Despicable Me. It’s still an anomaly that the first movie was the first Illumination film, especially with just how overall strange of a movie it is. While there was a little bit of a lull (at least I think it did, the third one made over a billion dollars, but no one ever talks about it), the latest Minions spin-off movie, The Rise of Gru, ended up being a pretty big phenomenon online. I ended up participating in that wave of wearing fancy clothes to the local premiere of it by wearing a “minion yellow” shirt and I ate a banana. Fun stuff, I have to admit. So, that’s why I’m pretty excited about the newest Despicable Me movie.

There’s admittedly not too much out there about the plot yet since it’s a little ways out, but what we do know is that Gru and Lucy, now with a new baby, Gru Jr., have to go on the run when criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal and femme fatale Valentina break out of prison and pledge to get their revenge on Gru.

The voice cast includes both returning members from the earlier entries, along with newcomers. Steve Carell (Asteroid City, Minions: The Rise of Gru) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, the upcoming Palm Royale) reprise their roles as Gru and Lucy, while Will Ferrell (Barbie, Quiz Lady) and Sofia Vergara (Griselda, Modern Family) fill out the roles of villains Maxime le Mal and Valentina. Other cast members include Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder, the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux), Joey King (Bullet Train, The Act), Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live, Babylon), Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly, the upcoming Drugstore June), Dana Gaier, and Madison Polan.

Despicable Me 4 hits theaters on July 3 from Universal.
