Written Weekend Update:

It was a very close race for first place at the domestic box office this weekend between Paramount's Mean Girls and Amazon MGM Studios' The Beekeeper. On Sunday, The Beekeeper had been estimated to take first place over the weekend by a slight margin, but with actuals, Mean Girls ultimately took first place with $6.90 million for the frame. Mean Girls stabilized somewhat this weekend by declining a so-so 40.8 percent. While Mean Girls hasn't had the greatest holding power thus far, the film has nonetheless now led the domestic weekend box office for three consecutive frames. The 17-day domestic total for Mean Girls stands at a solid $60.41 million. That is 2.6 percent behind the $62.01 million 17-day take of Paramount's Scream back in January of 2022 (that film declined an identical 40.8 percent in its third weekend to gross $7.23 million). Next weekend Mean Girls will no doubt fall out of first place with the release of Universal and Apple's Argylle. Internationally, Mean Girls grossed an estimated $4.3 million this weekend from 22 select international markets. That brings the film's international total to $22.6 million and current global total to $83.0 million.

Amazon MGM Studios' The Beekeeper claimed second place with $6.68 million. For the weekend frame, The Beekeeper trailed Mean Girls by just $222,469. Despite having to settle for a close second place, The Beekeeper held up very well this weekend by declining just 22.4 percent from last weekend. The Beekeeper has grossed $41.55 million through 17 days, as the film continues to outpace expectations and perform quite well for a Jason Statham-led film (not including The Meg films). Internationally, The Beekeeper remained strong with an estimated $10.9 million from 58 international markets. Respective totals for The Beekeeper stand at $61.9 million internationally and at $103.4 million globally.

Warner Bros.'s Wonka grossed $5.66 million this weekend to hold steady in third place. Wonka had another very nice hold this weekend, as the film declined a slim 15.7 percent from last weekend. With a 45-day domestic total of $194.93M, Wonka is now just $5.07 million away from reaching the $200 million domestic mark. Internationally, Wonka grossed $8.7 million this weekend from 77 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $357.3 million (including $75.6 million from the United Kingdom) and the film's current global haul to $552.3 million. On Wednesday (January 31) Wonka will open in South Korea.

Universal and Illumination's Migration took in $4.90 million to continue to claim fourth place. Migration was down a very slim 10.3 percent from last weekend's performance (when the computer animated film declined just 12.4 percent). Migration passed the $100 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed $101.00 million through 38 days of domestic release. This weekend also saw Migration pass the $100 million international and $200 million global marks. Migration grossed $5.7 million internationally this weekend from 76 international markets. Respective totals for Migration stand at $105.4 million internationally and at $206.4 million globally. On Friday (February 2) Migration will open in the United Kingdom.

Sony's Anyone But You grossed $4.63 million to round out this weekend's top five. Anyone But You continued to display tremendous holding power by declining a slim 14.4 percent from last weekend. With a 38-day domestic total of $71.02 million, the current total gross to opening weekend ratio for Anyone But You stands at an exceptional 11.84 to 1. Internationally, Anyone But You grossed an estimated $14.2 million this weekend from 48 international markets. This weekend saw Anyone But You debut with an estimated $1.2 million in Italy, and in holdover markets the film increased 3 percent over last weekend. Through Sunday, Anyone But You has grossed $55.4 million internationally and $126.4 million globally.

Grosses for Academy Award nominees for Best Picture this weekend included $2.910 million for Disney / Searchlight's Poor Things (from 2,300 locations), $2.598 million for Amazon MGM Studios' American Fiction (from 1,702 locations), an estimated $1.084 million for A24's The Zone of Interest (from 317 locations), $0.925 million for Universal's Oppenheimer (from 1,268 locations), $0.497 million for Focus's The Holdovers, $0.208 million for Paramount's Killers of the Flower Moon (from 941 locations) and $0.195 million for NEON's Anatomy of a Fall (from 380 locations). Respective total grosses stand at $328.08 million for Oppenheimer, at $67.60 million for Killers of the Flower Moon, at $24.65 million for Poor Things, at $19.32 million for The Holdovers, at $11.54 million for American Fiction, at $4.18 million for Anatomy of a Fall and at an estimated $3.00 million for The Zone of Interest.

Disney / Searchlight's Poor Things grossed an estimated $10.0 million internationally this weekend from 36 international markets. Debuts by international market for Poor Things this weekend included $2.1 million in Italy, $1.6 million in Mexico, $0.9 million in Spain and $0.7 million in Japan. Respective totals for Poor Things stand at $26.3 million internationally and at $51.0 million globally.

This weekend also saw Toho International's Godzilla Minus One gross $2.70 million upon returning to wide release. Godzilla Minus One played in 2,051 locations this weekend and as part of the return to wide release, a new black & white version of the film titled Godzilla Minus One Minus Color debuted this weekend. The 59-day domestic total for Godzilla Minus One stands at $55.11 million.
