Weekend Box Office Report: February 16th, 2024 to February 19th, 2024

Paramount's Bob Marley: One Love helped wake the domestic box office back up this weekend with a break-out first place performance. With updated estimates, the Bob Marley music biopic had respective three-day and four-day weekend holiday grosses of $28.60 million and $34.13 million. Since the film's debut on Valentine's Day Wednesday; Bob Marley: One Love has grossed a terrific $52.00 million through its first six days of domestic release. The film's estimated six-day gross to four-day opening weekend ratio of 1.52 to 1 also points towards Bob Marley: One Love not being extremely front-loaded towards its midweek performance (including $14.01 million Valentine's Day) after all. The film's continued strength as the holiday weekend has gone on in a positive early sign for Bob Marley: One Love going forward, as is the film's strong A rating on CinemaScore. Clearly Bob Marley: One Love is going over far better with audiences than it has with critics (critical reviews for the film have been largely negative), something that had felt like a real possibility heading into the film's release on Wednesday.

The respective three-day and four-day opening weekend grosses for Bob Marley: One Love ended up very close to the respective three-day and four-day $28.64 million and $33.61 million debuts of fellow Paramount release Mean Girls last month, though obviously the weekend grosses for Bob Marley: One Love are more impressive in comparison given the film's midweek opening. The break-out performance of Bob Marley: One Love was also much needed for the overall box office, which had been slow over the past four weeks, even for this time of year. Bob Marley: One Love was directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and stars Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch.

Internationally, Bob Marley: One Love grossed an estimated $29.0 million this weekend from 47 international markets. That places the film's global launch through Sunday at an estimated $75.5 million. Debuts for Bob Marley: One Love by international market included $9.3 million in the United Kingdom, $5.5 million in France, $2.0 million in Australia, $1.8 million in Brazil and $1.8 million in Germany.

Sony's Madame Web debuted in second place with updated respective three-day and four-day weekend estimates of $15.35 million and $18.00 million. Through Monday, the estimated six-day start for the S. J. Clarkson directed Madame Web stands at $26.21 million. Madame Web, a comic book based film set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, opened well below the $39.01 million three-day start of Morbius back in April of 2022. Thus far, there doesn't seem to be much demand for Sony's current non-Venom live-action Marvel films. With that said, Madame Web was able to open in line with its relatively modest pre-release expectations, as there was never much demand for the film in the lead-up to its release. The biggest draw for Madame Web no doubt looks to have been the presence of Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney in the film. Very negative critical reviews didn't help matters for Madame Web this weekend. Madame Web also doesn't look to be going over very well with audiences as the film received a lackluster C+ rating on CinemaScore, though at the same time the film's estimated six-day gross to four-day opening weekend ratio of 1.46 to 1 doesn't point towards Madame Web being extremely front-loaded thus far. Later this year will see Sony' release of two more Spider-Man Universe films: Kraven the Hunter on August 30 and the currently untitled Venom 3 on November 8.

Internationally, Madame Web started out with an estimated $25.7 million from 61 international markets. That places the global total for Madame Web at $49.3 million through Sunday. Debuts for Madame Web by international market included $2.9 million in Mexico, $2.9 million in the United Kingdom, $1.5 million in Australia, $1.5 million in Brazil, $1.5 million in Germany and $1.0 million in Spain. Through Monday, Madame Web has grossed an estimated $5.0 million from global IMAX screens ($3.1 million domestically and $1.9 million internationally). This coming Friday (February 23) Madame Web will open in Japan and the following Friday (March 1) the film will open in China.

After leading the box office each of the past two frames, Universal and Apple's Argylle placed in third this weekend with respective updated three-day and four-day weekend estimates of $4.88 million and $5.75 million. On the heels of last weekend's lackluster second weekend hold, Argylle held up surprisingly well this weekend, as the film's three-day gross was down just 21.9 percent from last weekend. Through Monday, the 18-day domestic total for Argylle stands at $37.50 million. While Argylle hasn't performed very well with its expensive price-tag in mind, as an Apple production with eventual streaming in mind, expectations for Argylle were significantly lower than usual for a film of its cost. Internationally, Argylle grossed an estimated $4.2 million this weekend from 81 international markets. That places the film's international total at $40.0 million and global total through Sunday at $76.6 million.

Over the four-day holiday frame, family films Migration and Wonka took fourth and fifth place. Universal and Illumination's Migration placed in fourth with respective updated three-day and four-day weekend estimates of $3.81 million and $5.10 million. Warner Bros.'s Wonka followed in fifth with respective updated three-day and four-day weekend estimates of $3.52 million and $4.32 million. Both films held up very well this weekend, as over the three-day frame Migration increased 29.8 percent over last weekend, while Wonka was up by 15.2 percent. Through Monday, respective total domestic grosses stand at $210.74 million for Wonka through 67 days and at $116.18 million for Migration through 60 days.
This weekend saw Wonka pass the $600 million global mark. The film grossed an estimated $7.8 million from 74 international markets this weekend, which brings the film's international total to $395.1 million and global total through Sunday to $605.0 million. Migration grossed $7.0 million this weekend from 79 international markets. Respective totals for the film through Sunday stand at $140.0 million internationally and at $254.9 million globally.

Fathom Events' release of The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 4 – 6 started out with $3.61 million over the three-day weekend and $3.95 million over the four-day holiday frame (to place in sixth). Since debuting in theatres on Thursday, The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 4 – 6 has grossed an estimated $4.73 million through five days of release. The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 4 – 6 came in below the recent start of The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 1 – 3, which had a three-day opening weekend of $5.95 million and a four-day start of $7.38 million. On Thursday, February 29, The Chosen Season 4: Episodes 7 & 8; the third and final theatrical installment of Season 4 of The Chosen, will debut in theatres.
