Weekend Estimates Update - August 11h, 2023 to August 13th, 2023:

Warner Bros.'s Barbie grossed an estimated $33.70 million this weekend to comfortably lead the domestic box office for a fourth consecutive frame. Barbie held up very nicely this weekend, as the blockbuster film declined 36.4 percent from last weekend. In addition to continuing to benefit from strong critical reviews and strong word of mouth, Barbie (and holdovers in general) received an added boost this weekend from Universal's The Last Voyage of the Demeter representing the only major new wide release this weekend. This weekend's performance for Barbie represented the eighth largest unadjusted fourth weekend gross of all-time. Barbie zoomed past the $500 million domestic mark this weekend and through Sunday has grossed an estimated $526.31 million after 24 days of release. Barbie has moved into eighteenth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list and the film is now just $47.93 million away from reaching the $574.24 million current domestic gross of The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest grossing release of 2023 thus far domestically.

Internationally, Barbie grossed an estimated $45.1 million this weekend from 75 international markets. That brings the film's international total to $657.6 million and the film's global haul to a massive $1.184 billion. The Greta Gerwig directed Barbie has now surpassed the $1.131 billion global total of 2019's Captain Marvel to become the highest grossing live-action film ever globally from a female director. This weekend saw Barbie debut with $1.9 million in the U.A.E., $1.8 million in Saudi Arabia and $1.4 million in Japan. Additional totals for Barbie by international market through Sunday include $101.1 million in the United Kingdom, $51.8 million in Mexico, $47.3 million in Australia, $42.2 million in Germany, $42.0 million in Brazil, $34.4 million in France, $33.7 million in China, $31.0 million in Italy, $30.0 million in Spain, $15.4 million in the Netherlands, $14.1 million in Argentina and $12.3 million in Poland.

After placing in third last weekend, Universal's Oppenheimer returned to second place this weekend with an estimated $18.80 million. That represented a very solid 35.4 percent decline from last weekend. Oppenheimer passed the $250 million domestic mark this weekend and through Sunday has grossed $264.27 million after 24 days of release. Oppenheimer is now only $28.31 million away from reaching the $292.58 million final domestic gross of 2010's Inception to become Christopher Nolan's highest grossing non-Dark Knight trilogy film as a director. Oppenheimer grossed an estimated $5.5 million from domestic IMAX screens this weekend, which brings the film's domestic IMAX total to $75.8 million (that represents the 4th highest grossing IMAX domestic total of all-time). As strong as Oppenheimer continues to perform in IMAX, it was a bit surprising that the film didn't hold up ever better in IMAX this weekend given that Oppenheimer will lose its IMAX screens to Warner Bros.'s Blue Beetle this coming Friday.

Oppenheimer grossed an estimated $31.9 million internationally this weekend from 79 international markets. Respective totals for Oppenheimer stand at $384.8 million internationally and at $649.0 million globally. Totals for Oppenheimer by international market through Sunday include $58.1 million in the United Kingdom, $35.4 million in Germany, $28.0 million in France, $21.0 million in Australia, $17.7 million in India, $16.8 million in Mexico, $16.3 million in Spain, $14.3 million in the Netherlands, $11.6 million in Brazil and $11.0 million in Saudi Arabia. Oppenheimer grossed an estimated $4.6 million from international IMAX screens this weekend, which brings the film's international IMAX total to $58.7 million and the film's global IMAX haul to $134.4 million. Oppenheimer is now the sixth highest grossing IMAX release of all-time globally (and that's without being released in IMAX in China, Japan, Russia and South Korea).

Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was up one spot from last weekend to move into third place with an estimated $15.75 million. That was down a very solid 43.8 percent from last weekend's opening weekend performance, though it should also be reminded that last weekend's gross was deflated by the Wednesday opening. Through twelve days, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has grossed $72.79 million, as the film continues to perform very nicely, especially given that Mutant Mayhem was significantly less expensive than usual for a high-profile computer animated film. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is already within shouting distance of the $82.05 million final domestic gross of 2016's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (which also had a much larger price-tag). Internationally, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem grossed an estimated $10.4 million from 47 international markets this weekend, including debuts of $2.9 million in Mexico and $1.8 million in France. Respective totals for the film stand at $21.9 million internationally (including $7.2 million from the United Kingdom) and at $94.7 million globally.

On the heels of last weekend's solid start, Warner Bros.'s Meg 2: The Trench was down two spots and a sharp 57.7 percent from last weekend to place in fourth with an estimated $12.70 million. It appears that the film's poor critical reviews and mixed word of mouth started to kick in this weekend, as 2018's The Meg declined 53.4 percent in its second weekend to gross $21.15 million (and that was against much tougher new competition than Meg 2: The Trench dealt with this weekend). The ten-day domestic total for Meg 2: The Trench stands at $54.14 million. Meg 2: The Trench may also have difficulty stabilizing next weekend, as the film will be facing new direct competition from fellow Warner Bros. release Blue Beetle. Fortunately for Meg 2: The Trench, the film continues to perform significantly stronger internationally, as Meg 2: The Trench grossed an estimated $43.7 million this weekend from 75 international markets. Meg 2: The Trench grossed $16.5 million this weekend in China, where the film has grossed $90.2 million to date (Meg 2: The Trench was produced in part by CMC Pictures from China). Respective totals for Meg 2: The Trench stand at $202.8 million internationally and at $256.9 million globally. Meg 2: The Trench will open in South Korea this Tuesday (August 15).

Meanwhile, Universal and Amblin's The Last Voyage of the Demeter was off to a lackluster fifth place start with an estimated $6.50 million. That was below the already modest consensus expectations for the R-rated horror film heading into the weekend. The Dracula themed The Last Voyage of the Demeter also opened below the $8.03 million start of Universal's Dracula themed Renfield this past April. Mixed critical reviews didn't help matters for The Last Voyage of the Demeter this weekend and the film doesn't look to be going over that much better with audiences after receiving a modest B- rating on CinemaScore. The audience breakdown for The Last Voyage of the Demeter skewed 62 percent male, 38 percent female, a sizable 75 percent over 25 (including 46 percent over 35) and 25 percent under 25.

Disney's Haunted Mansion and A24's Talk to Me claimed sixth and seventh place with respective weekend estimates of $5.61 million and $5.12 million. Haunted Mansion declined 39.1 percent from last weekend (which was quite solid given that the film was playing in 880 fewer locations this weekend than last weekend), while Talk to Me decreased a very slim 19.0 percent. Respective 17-day domestic totals stand at $52.87 million for Haunted Mansion and at $31.32 million for the far less expensive Talk to Me. Talk to Me already has a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.00 to 1, as the film is clearly turning into a word of mouth driven hit, and should continue to hold up well for as long as it is able to hold onto screens and showtimes.

In international news, Sony's Gran Turismo started out its international run with an estimated $10.7 million from 30 select international markets. Debuts for Gran Turismo this weekend included $2.3 million in France, $1.3 million in the United Kingdom, $1.0 million in Australia and $1.0 million in Germany. Later this month Gran Turismo will open in Brazil and in Mexico on Thursday, August 24, before opening the next day domestically on Friday, August 25. The film is set to open in China the following week on Friday, September 1, and in Japan two weeks later on September 15.
