Box Office Predictions: The Reign Of ‘Dog Man’ Begins

Weekend Box Office Predictions: January 31st, 2025 - February 2nd, 2025

Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Dog Man will look to bring some needed life to the box office this weekend. The computer animated spin-off to 2017's Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie was directed by Peter Hastings and features the vocal talents of Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery and Isla Fisher. Dog Man is playing in 3,885 locations this weekend, will be getting a sizable amount of average showtimes per location and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. On the average, critical reviews for Dog Man have been good. Back in June of 2017, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie opened with $23.85 million and went on to gross $73.92 million domestically. But two of the more recent films from DreamWorks Animation; last year's The Wild Robot and 2023's Trolls Band Together, may prove to be better opening weekend comparisons for Dog Man, especially with Dog Man opening in a marketplace that is much emptier than the overall marketplace Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie opened in. Dog Man could very well open somewhere in between the $30.00 million opening weekend of Trolls Band Together and the $35.79 million opening weekend of The Wild Robot. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Dog Man will debut with $33.5 million this weekend.

Also opening in wide release this weekend is Warner Bros. and New Line's Companion. The R-rated horror dark-comedy was directed by Drew Hancock and stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid. Companion is playing in 3,285 locations this weekend, will be playing on IMAX screens and has Thursday previews shows beginning at 3PM. Companion has gone over extremely well with critics. At the same time, Companion does feel like the type of horror film that may not necessarily appeal to more mainstream horror audiences (especially out of the gate this weekend). With the extremely positive critical reaction to the film, Companion may be able to outpace the $10.90 million opening weekend take of the poorly received Wolf Man two weeks ago, and is all but certain to hold up better than Wolf Man beyond this weekend. Look for Companion to debut in second place this weekend with $11.5 million.

Last weekend Sony's One of Them Days had a terrific second weekend hold by declining just 32.2 percent to take third place with $8.01 million. The well-received One of Them Days has continued to hold up very well during the midweek this week, as Wednesday's performance was down a slim 14.7 percent from the previous Wednesday. One of Them Days is likely to hold up even better this weekend than the film did last weekend and could decline by 21.4 percent to hold steady in third place with $6.3 million. That would bring One of Them Days to the brink of the $35 million domestic mark.

Lionsgate's Flight Risk is coming off of a respectable first place debut of $11.58 million. Although Flight Risk has gone over poorly with critics and doesn't look to be going over all that much better with audiences after receiving a modest C rating on CinemaScore, at the same time the film should get a bit of a boost this weekend from the break in the NFL Playoffs, between last weekend's Conference Championship games and next weekend's Super Bowl LIX. A decline of 48.2 percent from last weekend would transfer into a fourth place take of $6.0 million for Flight Risk this weekend.

With Dog Man entering the marketplace this weekend, Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King and Moana 2 and Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are all likely to lose some momentum this weekend. Mufasa: The Lion King could decrease 38.3 percent to round out this weekend's top five with $5.3 million, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 could decline 41.7 percent to follow in sixth place with $3.1 million and Moana 2 could slow by 45.2 percent to place in seventh with $2.3 million.
