Box Office Predictions: ‘Bob Marley’ Looks To Hold Off ‘Demon Slayer’
Weekend Box Office Predictions: February 23rd, 2024 - February 25th, 2024
After last weekend's impressive first place start, Paramount's Bob Marley: One Love will look to top the domestic box office for a second consecutive frame this weekend. The Bob Marley music biopic is coming off of respective three-day and four-day holiday weekend grosses of $28.66 million and $33.63 million. While critical reviews for Bob Marley: One Love have been largely negative, the film has proved to be critic proof thus far and the film also looks to be going over far better with audiences after receiving a strong A rating on CinemaScore. Bob Marley: One Love will also get a bit of a boost this weekend from last weekend's gross having been deflated somewhat by the film's Wednesday opening. Bob Marley: One Love could decline a very solid 40.7 percent to gross $17.0 million this weekend.
This weekend's top new release will likely be Sony and Crunchyroll's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Hashira Training. Like last year's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Hashira Training consists of episodes of the Demon Slayer anime television series. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Hashira Training is playing in 1,949 locations this weekend, will have some IMAX showtimes and has Thursday preview shows beginning at 4PM. Last year, To the Swordsmith Village opened with an estimated $10.12 million. Normally a release like To the Hashira Training would experience at least a bit of a decline from its predecessor, but that may not be the case this time around thanks in part to To the Hashira Training having Thursday preview shows and IMAX screenings, whereas To the Swordsmith Village didn't benefit from either of those factors (and also opened the same weekend as Creed III). BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Hashira Training will debut in second place with $11.3 million this weekend.
This weekend also sees the release of Lionsgate's Ordinary Angels. The Jon Gunn directed drama stars Hilary Swank, Alan Ritchson, Nancy Travis and Tamala Jones. Ordinary Angels will be helped out by being this weekend's widest new release (the film is playing in 3,020 locations). The film also has Thursday preview shows beginning at 6PM. There doesn't look to be much anticipation for Ordinary Angels, though the film could still potentially benefit from walk-up business over the weekend, especially given the film's good critical reviews. Ordinary Angels will also look to appeal to faith-based audiences. Ordinary Angels could debut in third place this weekend with $5.9 million.
Last weekend saw Sony's Madame Web start out in second with respective three-day and four-day holiday weekend grosses of $15.34 million and $17.85 million. Although Madame Web opened towards the higher end of consensus expectations, obviously the film's performance has been quite lackluster for a comic book based film, both in general and from Sony. The poor reviewed Madame Web doesn't look to be going over all that much better with audiences after receiving a C+ rating on CinemaScore. As with Bob Marley: One Love this weekend, Madame Web will get a bit of a boost from last weekend's gross having been deflated a bit by the film's Wednesday opening.
Madame Web is also holding onto some of its IMAX showtimes this weekend. Look for Madame Web to drop a sharp 62.2 percent this weekend to gross $5.8 million, which would place the film in a tight race with Ordinary Angels over the frame.
Focus's Drive-Away Dolls opens in 2,279 locations this weekend. The Ethan Coen directed comedy features an ensemble cast that includes Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp and Matt Damon. Thursday preview shows for the film begin at 5PM. A bit surprisingly, critical reviews for Drive-Away Dolls have been mixed, though more so positive than negative on the average. In addition to hoping to appeal to Coen Brothers fans (it should be noted Joel Coen wasn't involved with the film), Drive-Away Dolls will also look to appeal to LGBTQ+ audiences. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Drive-Away Dolls will debut in seventh place this weekend with $3.1 million.
