I have to admit that I do have a little bit of a bias against Tim Burton. A lot of his movies just aren’t my thing. There are exceptions to this, though. His Batman movies, specifically the first one, are some of the first movies I remember watching, and I think Sleepy Hollow is an interesting watch. Another one of the exceptions is Beetlejuice, which I think is a good balance of weird, off-kilter comedy and the stop-motion animation he likes to use. Outside of that, he really just isn’t my favorite director out there. However, we have what could be considered one of the most anticipated movies of the year to many: the very cleverly-titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem. Along with the drop of the trailer, reports that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will have minimal use of CGI and instead use practical effects and Burton’s signature stop-motion animation has spread like wildfire. Hearing that admittedly got me a little excited for the movie, so I hope it ends up going well.

Returning from the first film are Michael Keaton (Batman, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)), Winona Ryder (Stranger Things, Girl, Interrupted), and Catherine O'Hara (Schitt’s Creek, the upcoming The Wild Robot), with new cast members including Jenna Ortega (X, Wednesday), Justin Theroux (White House Plumbers, American Psycho), Monica Belucci (the Matrix franchise, Memory), Burn Gorman (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, The Dark Knight Rises), and Willem Dafoe (Poor Things, the upcoming Nosferatu).

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will hits theaters from Warner Bros. on September 6th, 2024.
