A Tale of Two Categories: The Golden Globes

It’s become an awards tradition to watch the Golden Globes make a choice in their production or a baffling nomination and have a good scoff. It was great to hear that this year that tradition could continue with the announcement of two new categories which cause problems. These two categories are…

Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement

Best Performance in a Stand Up Comedy on Television

One of these categories is an obviously terrible idea and the other one is an interesting noble pursuit that easily misses the mark.

It was a few years ago when the Oscars pitched their most popular movie category and this was met with complete and utter criticism and was revoked almost immediately and therefore the Globes saw that entire ordeal and thought, “Everyone hated this? Sounds like us.”

The category will nominate eight films with the qualification of making more than 150 million dollars at the Box Office and 100 million of that has to be domestic. This will also include movies from streaming services for which the data included will be drawn from “recognized industry sources.” This is the first problem as there is no way to actually draw streaming data properly and so it does not seem likely that there could be adequate measuring qualifications.

The other part of this category that does not make any sense is there will be a clear winner which according the description of the category should be the film that makes the most money and therefore there will be a clear mathematical winner but instead it will be decided by the HFPA based on movies over that amount of Box Office results which seems to be contradictory.

There is the ethical problems of rewarding commerce instead of art where the money itself could be and should be considered the reward.

The Best Performance by a Stand Up Comedian actually seems like a much better idea as Stand Up Specials often invade some of the comedy categories at award shows where they are wholly a different type of comedy special, but instead this award is going to the performance of a stand up comedian and while a comedian does have a type of energy and work on the delivery of their comedy, the performances are pretty much their authentic selves and so it seems strange to take a look at which one will have the best “performance”

It’s easier to just say that Globes are gonna Globes and to just ignore them and let this travel through the pop culture ether, but the Globes has the opportunity to add Best Casting or Stunt Work try and compete with the Oscars but instead they did something the Academy literally got negative attention which is the perfect description of Globes.
