‘A Minecraft Movie’ Trailer: The Highest-Selling Game of All Time Invades Theaters
From Ryan Cordaro
I’ve spoken about this time and time again, but video game movies are good now. That curse has been broken for a while now, and it doesn’t feel like it’s going to stop soon. Of course, that curse isn’t entirely broken. I haven’t seen Borderlands yet, but all signs point to that being a unbridled disaster that I admittedly really want to watch. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is coming out this December, and it looks like a whole lot of fun. We also have to mention The Last of Us, which is set to return for its second season next year on HBO. We’re at least trending up with video game movies, but we might have our biggest wild card yet with A Minecraft Movie. Yes, that’s the real title.
The Minecraft movie follows four misfits who find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter from the Overworld, Steve. I’m not going to lie when I say that I think the effects are horrifying to look at. I wasn’t opposed to a live-action Minecraft movie, but after seeing this, I’m just curious why this wasn’t fully animated. It’s not exactly on the level of watching the trailer for Cats, but it does remind me of the original design for Sonic the Hedgehog, which got such a bad response that they delayed the movie and redesigned him. In the case of Minecraft, I don’t think they’ll overhaul anything since much more would have to be done, but I’m going to remain optimistic since I do like the cast.
The currently-announced cast includes Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Fast X), Jack Black (School of Rock, Kung Fu Panda 4), Emma Myers (Wednesday, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple, Peacemaker), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy, Lisey’s Story), Kate McKinnon (Barbie, Saturday Night Live), Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Time Bandits), and Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus, Legally Blonde).
Warner Bros. will release A Minecraft Movie in theaters on April 4th, 2025, which I noticed is the same weekend that the Mario movie released last year.
