Complete Emmy Nomination Reactions

The Emmy Nominations are in and there were plenty of snubs and surprises among the expected nominations. Each category will be examined in the lead up to the ceremony this September, but for now these are my initial reactions.

One of the largest surprises was Idris Elba getting nominated for Hijack which was not even on the radar of the Best Lead Actor in a Drama category, while Emma Stone was surprisingly snubbed for her role in The Curse, a series that received zero nominations.

What We Do in the Shadows has always done well in the comedy section, but the performances have never seen a nomination until this year where Matt Berry finally broke through.

The Morning Show has been nominated for performances in the past, but this year it has picked up a ridiculous amount of lead and supporting performance nominations while also finally being nominated for Best Drama, regardless of what the critics think.

Kate Winslet had always proven to be a household name at the Emmys, frequently winning for her roles in various limited series, but her legend and talent couldn’t get her a nomination for her most recent one, The Regime, which received an overall fairly muted response.

Maya Rudolph proves that she is loved by the Emmys, always grabbing nominations for guest spots and now finally getting a nomination for a lead role in her comedy Loot, which has not hit levels of popularity, but her name recognition is enough to drive her there.

The Bear broke a record for most nominations of a comedy series, upsetting those who consider it category fraud. However, it was light on the occasional supporting performance nominations, specifically Abby Elliot and Matty Mathenson, who weren’t considered locks, but are still surprising snubs.

3 Body Problem was pretty close to a nomination, but with its uncertain future and heavy science fiction, it seemed like it might not make it to the top spot. However, it managed to grab a Best Drama nomination along with Fallout ,which is a populus pick that also ended up succeeding with a deserved Emmy nomination for Walton Goggins.

Nominations for the fifth season of the anthology series Fargo were aplenty, especially Jon Hamm and Juno Temple for their lead performances, but it surprisingly lost out in supporting nominations for Joe Kerry and Jennifer Jason-Leigh. Baby Reindeer is the likely culprit as it over-performed with nominations, including a historical nomination for Nava Mau in the supporting category. Elsewhere, there was a surprise nomination for Dakota Fanning for her performance from Ripley.

Nava Mau was not the only historical nomination of this year, as the first transgender Latinx nominee. Kali Raes and Lily Gladstone were both nominated for their supporting performances in the Limited Series category for True Detective: Night Country and Under the Bridge, respectively; they are the first indigenous people to be nominated for Emmys.

The final season of Reservation Dogs was getting a great deal of buzz, but there was still the worry that the Emmys would snub the series again. Not only did it receive a deserved Best Comedy Series nomination, it also snagged an even more unexpected and deserved nomination for D’Pharaoh Won-A-Tai in Best Lead Actor in a Comedy.

Donald Glover was expectedly nominated for Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the series was recognized with a nom for Best Drama, but the real and pleasant surprise was Maya Erskine also getting a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series, which was talked about but not entirely expected.

Feud: Capote vs the Swans was expected to get several different nominations for the numerous performances and Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, and Tom Hollander all were nominated, but the most wholesome was a posthumous nomination for Treat Williams.

The Gilded Age had a much better showing at the Emmys in its second season with a nomination for Carrie Coon and Christine Barasnki and yet it still under-performed with Cynthia Nixon and Nathan Lane expecting to get nominations, but missing out.

One of the most surprising snubs was The Gentlemen losing out on Best Comedy and Theo James losing out on a nomination for his performance as a lead actor in the series. The series was not a lock, but it was somewhat expected to be in play in either of those categories.

Shogun had the most nominations of any series, which makes sense as it is the clear frontrunner is several of the drama categories, yet yet it still missed out in a nomination for Cosmo Jarvis as well as a nomination for any of the supporting ladies, but especially Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido.

Slow Horses finally got its due with nominations for Drama, Lead Actor in Gary Oldman, and Supporting Actor in Jack Lowden, but still missed out in a nomination for Kristen Scott Thomas for Best Supporting Actress, which is a shame but hopefully the next season will be another opportunity.

There were plenty of other nominations but most of which were fairly expected (and still well deserved). It will be interesting to see how the Emmy season will end up playing out.
