Does ‘Jury Duty’ Have A Shot At An Emmy? - Awards Outlook
Jury Duty Emmy Chances
One the biggest surprise comedy hits of the year was Jury Duty on the very low key streamer Freevee which works through Amazon. The premise of this comedy is what makes it so original that it might be too difficult to see what categories it can be nominated within.
The series is about an entirely fictional court case where everyone is an actor except for one real person who has no idea. This type of setup feels like it could be considered in the structured reality program categories. However, because this is technically scripted it may not qualify and those reality categories are usually ruled by a particular show that is almost impossible to dethrone.
For this reason primarily, this series is submitting for Best Comedy and because it has a great deal of comedy writers behind it who are no stranger to award shows and this series is structured like a comedy it has the chance of grabbing a nomination here. While this is an unconventional pick, its popularity rising means it could easily grab a nomination for Best Comedy Series but its realistic twist and category confusion could harm its chances.
The best chance at this show getting a nomination is for James Marsden in Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series playing a version of himself non the show. He has been campaigning the hell out for this show during the awards season with several interviews and also is considered to have one of the best performances of his career in this series.
There are many other members of the rest of the cast that all deserve nominations but none of them have stood out or unfortunately don’t have enough name recognition but their names are being submitted so it will be great to see a surprise if others can make it as well.
One of the most baffling decisions is submitting the real life subject of the series, Ronald Gladden, for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. While he was a charming individual and the key to the entire series he should not qualify as he does not actually act in the series.
This series is definitely a dark horse in most comedy categories but due to its rising popularity at just the right time there is a chance to see this in some nominations.
