Review: The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Home » Review: The Bob’s Burgers Movie

Those who ordered a king-sized Bob’s Burgers episode in the form of a film will be pleased to know that The Bob’s Burgers Movie largely satisfies the appetite for the crazy antics of the Belcher family through a fun, mysterious, musical extravaganza.

A water main break leads to a giant sinkhole in front of Bob’s Burgers as the family faces mounting financial pressures and a murder mystery ensnares the Belcher kids in the first big screen outing for the long-running animated series. The film succeeds for much of the same reasons that the series continues to go on strong: the Belcher family is a delight, the humor is nonstop, and the project exudes undeniable heart. The musical numbers are aplenty here, as expected, while each member of the Belcher family is explored in a little more depth than we have seen before. New revelations from the past help explain reasons for certain parts of the show (such as the ears Louise wear) while the scope of the plot is larger than seen in the show. It all simply works well, delivering on the foundation built over the past decade in a sure-to-please outing for fans and newcomers alike.

The animation is also crisp, the lighting in particular accentuating each frame; the characters have never looked better. With any film version of an animated series, there always is the question of “why,” this being no different. While the film is a ton of fun, I’m not sure there is much need for it; the story could have been explored in the series itself and it doesn’t exactly do anything dynamic here. Still, The Bob’s Burgers Movie is a blast from beginning to end, a flippin’ good escape into a charming outing that we need more of these days. I absolutely love the Belchers.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie hits theaters this Friday.
