Review: Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers

CHIP ’N DALE: RESCUE RANGERS (2022)

I. Am. Shocked. Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers is an incredibly intelligent “reboot” of the classic Disney characters that is refreshingly original, laugh out loud hilarious, and one of the best films to hit this year.

Having split since their days as television stars, Chip (voiced by John Mulaney) and Dale (voiced by Andy Samberg) reunite to investigate the disappearance of a former cast mate and friend, uncovering a much more sinister plot at play. Writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand absolutely knock it out of the park here, taking an idea rooted in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and expanding upon it to bring a modern update to two hilarious characters. Everything about the story works from the countless references to both Disney properties and others alike to the tight, clever, engrossing story that pulls it all together. This is an example of director Akiva Schaffer and the filmmakers knowing exactly what they are working with and being confident in their vision. It results in one of the most fun movie experiences in recent memory.

Mulaney and Samberg completely sold me on their voicing of Chip and Dale, something I was concerned about heading into it. Add in others like J.K. Simmons and Seth Rogen and you have an all-star cast that brings it at every turn. Kiki Layne is also absolutely delightful in her role, assisting in the investigation. Rescue Rangers brings the nostalgia, not only for the titular characters, but for so many other properties that are incorporated throughout the film, some prominently while others are passing in the background. This is a film that will please adults and children alike, nailing absolutely every gag and doing so with a visually balanced competence that never makes the CGI or animation look cheap. Audiences will enjoy surprise after surprise; it’s shocking to me that Disney signed off on all of this, but I’m glad they did. Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected to love this film so much. Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers is simply a delight. Chip ’n Dale absolutely rock and are the heroes we need in 2022.

Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers hits Disney+ this Friday.
