Review: Sonic The Hedgehog 2

A sequel that delivers on everything expected, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a delightful mix of fan service and comedy that proves to be fun for the whole family.

Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is back and has teamed up with otherworldly creature Knuckles (Idris Elba) to locate and harness the power of the Master Emerald. It’s up to Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) to stop them. The same humor and levity that made the first film such a hit continues on here, though the first half is a weaker product than the first. Carrey is absolutely bonkers in this outing, leaning into the ridiculousness of his character and clearly have a lot of fun. The graphics also continue to be impressive, if not a little crisper than the previous film. Here we have a strong story that elevates the stakes and the pressure on Sonic as he attempts to wrestle with being a hero and being a kid, but the film drags on probably about twenty minutes too long.

One absolute standout in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, sister to Maddie (Tika Sumpter) who is not super fond of Tom (James Marsden) and his creature sidekick. As the location shifts to her tropical wedding, chaos ensues and hilarity reigns thanks to Rothwell’s delivery and facial reactions… truly laugh out loud funny. Elba’s Knuckles is also quite entertaining, the iciness of his serious demeanor breaking down as Sonic tests his patience. There’s even a great Vin Diesel jokes in there.

This is a film that is much-needed in times like this, a family outing that allows you to kick back and enjoy without thinking too much. Paramount has struck gold with the series so far and, given the credits scene that turned the audience into a raucous crowd of excitement, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits theaters this Friday.
