Reshoots have become part of the regular course of filmmaking in recent years, especially for Marvel films, but recent reports out of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are causing many to raise an eyebrow. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Sam Raimi’s film is heading back to Los Angeles for “significant” reshoots, as well as “additional photography.” Benedict Cumberbatch is involved, of course, for what is being described as at least six weeks of shooting, six days a week. I’m no pro, but that seems like a lot. Other sources sought to temper concerns, sharing that this is all normal and that other Marvel films have had more. Still, given that this sequel’s development was somewhat rushed to begin with since original director Scott Derrickson left in January of 2020, leading to Raimi taking charge and leading essentially a reworking of the entire movie, we’ll be keeping an eye on this. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6th, 2022.
