Review: Vivo

VIVO (2021)

A delightful yet unbalanced musical adventure, Vivo mixes catchy tunes with adorable characters to deliver a fun story of love and purpose.

In Vivo, a musical kinkajou (voiced by Lin-Manuel Miranda) embarks on a journey to deliver a song for an old friend. The film doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking in terms of story or animation, but Miranda’s musical contributions are exciting and fresh (and impactful: “All I can do when the road bends is lean into the curve”). That doesn’t necessarily mean that they all fit, however, as some are out of place. Ynairaly Simo’s Gabi is sure to be a favorite of all who watch with infectious energy, a hip look, and a surprising emotional arc that I didn’t see coming.

Vivo doesn’t always work; it gets bogged down a bit in the middle and has some elements that are downright goofy. But when you step back and look at the film as a whole, the film is a success, an animated adventure that successfully combines music, heart, and humor.

Vivo is now streaming on Netflix.
