Each week, Liz from pop.goesthemovie will be recapping the latest happenings in the Big Brother house! Season 23 kicks off this Wednesday.

Welcome to BIG BROTHER! Season 23 premieres this week and this is when I really start to get excited about the new season. Because not only do we get to see sneak previews of the house (which is my favorite part), we also get to meet the cast! I try not to pick my favorites until after a few eps air, but who am I kidding, I totally pick my favorites just from their quick bios and intro videos. So, by the end of the season, I always end up eating crow! Ha!

This year, CBS pledged to include at least fifty percent of people of color and those who were generally underrepresented. By the looks and the bios of the cast, it seems that CBS kept their word. Well except there is only one person who’s 40. I guess people over 40 don’t want to be on Big Brother! There are 16 Houseguests (HGs) this season, including a Flight Attendant, Start-up Founder, Forensic Scientist, Attorney (meet the entire cast below), and your typical ‘Account Executive’ and ‘Tech Sales Consultant’ …which means these people have been cast on the show! I’ve been watching this show long enough (since Season 1 back in 1997) to know that any of these ‘careers’ just mean the casting director found the HGs on social media or at a bar/club and asked them to be on the show. Can’t fool me…I’m on to you Big Brother!!

This season’s theme of Big Brother is Beach Club meets Casino, and the HGs are in for a big surprise! Big Brother’s motto is “Expect the unexpected” and this season the HGs will be put in teams (yes, this again). According to CBS, the HGs will enter the house in groups of four, with each group immediately competing to become a captain. The four captains will then divide the players into teams for the first month of the season, and if someone from a team wins Head of Household (HoH), then that entire team is safe from eviction that week. Whew…that’s a lot to take in.

I think production decided to create teams because of the past year’s mega alliances, which got boring pretty quickly! Hopefully, this will stir things up… that’s IF it works according to plan (which it usually doesn’t). Word on the street is… there’s also a ‘Wildcard’ competition where three teams without HoH choose one representative for a competition. The winner is safe, but others will receive a punishment if they accept safety. As interesting as this Wildcard ‘comp’ sounds, I feel like this may be something that no one ends up doing. I can’t wait to see what this season holds. And with all the surprises and new twists, it looks like this season will be an exciting watch! Or at least I hope so. I’m just hoping it won’t be a dud like the last few seasons! (crossing fingers)

Now without further ado, here’s the new cast of Big Brother 23 with my first impressions (and of course, I’ve already picked my favorites…SIGH):

Note: Rumored casting changes have yet to be verified, thus have not been included.

Alyssa Lopez, 23 (Swimwear Designer) – She’s watched the show since Season 11, so this is promising. But, I can’t figure her out. I’ll keep my eye on her!

Azah Awasum, 30 (Director of Sales) – I feel like she was cast to be on the show. Might end up in a showmance (reality TV romance)

Brent Champagne, 28 (Flight Attendant) – Definitely looking for a showmance. Is totally there for one thing… FAME!

Britini D’Angelo, 24 (Kindergarten Teacher) – Will do good on comps…but will most likely be an ‘outsider’.

Christian Birkenberger, 23 (General Contractor Assistant) – One of those ‘careers’ that just means he was cast on this show and wants to be famous. Also seems like the “chill” type of guy. And he looks kind of like Kit Harington! He’ll go far.

Christie Valdiserri, 27 (Professional Dancer) – I don’t think she knows Big Brother. Seems like she’s going in blind. I feel like she’s going to have a hard time adjusting.

Derek Frazier, 29 (Safety Officer) – His dad is boxer Joe Frazier. I don’t think this will come into play, but not certain he will last long. Also, I’ve been told… our own Joe from knows him!

Derek Xiao, 24 (Start-up Founder) – Too smart for his own good. I don’t see him going far. But could totally surprise me (Like Ian did!)

Brandon “Frenchie” French, 34 (Farmer) – This guy will probably do well. But I feel like he doesn’t know the game.

Hannah Chaddha, 21 (Graduate Student) – I see her as a total coaster (person who stays in the background and does what they’re told. Won’t make bold moves).

Kyland Young, 29 (Account Executive) – Another person who was definitely ‘discovered’ and probably has only seen new episodes of Big Brother.

Sarah Steagall, 27 (Forensic Scientist) – Says she wants to be a floater (goes from power to power, but never does anything). However…I feel like she’s going to play the game! I think she’s one to watch! *Favorite*

Tiffany Mitchell, 40 (Phlebotomist) – She’s the oldest person to join the cast. Wonder if the HGs will hold it against her. They always do!

Travis Long, 22 (Tech Sales Consultant) – Totally was cast on the show! This guy will know nothing of the game. But I feel like he’s going to get into it and get far, only because he’ll be good at comps and everyone will like him.

Whitney Williams, 30 (Make-Up Artist) – First glance, I thought she was the stereotypical white chick and knew nothing of this game. But turns out she’s a mom and wants to win. So maybe she’ll do well.

Xavier Prather, 27 (Attorney) – I found me a new boyfriend! Which usually means they’ll get the boot early! Haha *Favorite*

Ed. Note: If you’re not familiar with Big Brother (US), here’s the lowdown… BIG BROTHER is hosted by Julie Chen Moonves and follows a group of people living together in a house outfitted with 94 HD cameras and 113 microphones, recording their every move 24 hours a day. Each week, someone will be voted out of the house, with the last remaining Houseguest receiving the grand prize of $500,000. The show premieres live, Wednesday, July 7 on CBS with a 90-minute episode. And will air every Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday starting July 11.
