Review: SHORT – There Are Bunnies On Fire In The forest (Tribeca 2021)

SHORT: THERE ARE BUNNIES ON FIRE IN THE FOREST (TRIBECA)

This stop-motion short seems to be highlighting how restricted we have been during the COVID-19 pandemic through the eyes of a young child who gets in trouble for kissing her classmate on the cheek. Clever as the artistry is here, there is an odd, slightly unnerving feeling given off by the characters. While I am sure there is a deeper message somewhere here that incorporates the main child’s escalating understanding of the gravity of the pandemic, leading to reference to bunnies on fire in the forest, it’s lost on me. Perhaps the message is that while the pandemic rages on, children still need the space to be children? A short needs to ensure that it is able to connect with viewers in the time that it is on screen; this film, unfortunately, fails to do so.
