Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. Preview From Tall & Oates

John (@jables4) and Darryl (@watchitlike and @wabashdk1) are recapping Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., Hulu’s new animated series that premieres with all episodes dropping on Friday, May 21st, 2021.

Hi, Everyone.  We are Tall & Oates and we’re going to be reviewing season 1 of M.O.D.O.K. for you all.

First, introductions are in order.

JOHN: I’m John Beck and I’ve been a die hard comic guy from way back. Of course,  Spider-Man was always my guy. There are pictures of me as baby wearing Spider-Man clothes. But then, when I was 11, my life was changed. Being a weird, gross pre-teen, I related to weird gross mutants. So, naturally, my favorite book was X-FACTOR. Havok, Polaris, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, Quicksilver, Jamie Madrox were my favorites. Especially Multiple Man. Madrox the Multiple Man. ‘His own beginning and his own end, his own best friend, Multiple Man.”

P.S. Also Moon KNIGHT is cool and also SLAPSTICK or whatever…

DARRYL: I’m Darryl Kennon and I’ve been a comic nerd since I was 5 years old.  Spider-man has always been my favorite as well, but I have a fondness for anything and everything comic-related.  I also co-host a podcast, that will be returning soon, called “Watch It Like.”  We breakdown movies and tv-shows weekly and give you insight into how to best enjoy them.  There are no bad movies, just bad audience expectations.  I have a weirdly encyclopedic knowledge of shows and movies that I’ve seen, which hopefully means we’ll be able to key-in on all the references and easter eggs dropped into each episode.

Now to the preview…

JOHN: So i have very little knowledge of MODOK. The most I know is Ed Brubaker’s revamp in 2004. He became M.O.D.O.C. (Military Operatives Designed Only for Combat). It was a much more sleek new design. Otherwise, I know he’s a big giant head (not from 3rd Rock From The Sun) and he works for A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics – founded by Aldrich Killian aka Guy Pearce) But I love the cast. Patton Oswalt is always great. Melissa Fumero and Ben Schwartz (as Melissa and Lou Tarleton respectively) will never get old. I don’t know how much about MODOK but I’m willing to learn. Again, the cast is amazing. Jon Hamm is Tony Stark – he’s just so handsome… Jon Daly is the Super-Adaptoid and I couldn’t think of better casting (if you haven’t seen his “Snowman” video, do yourself a favor and check it out)

The animation is very Robot Chicken but…. with more purpose…? Does that make sense? With Patton Oswalt behind the wheel, I can’t wait to see what’s next.

DARRYL: MODOK has historically been a b-level villain at best.  Always getting his @$$ handed to him fairly easily.  However, to me, he took a fun turn in his run with Gwenpool.  By becoming more of a punchline and leaning into the absurdity, MODOK has secretly become one of the better villains in the Marvel gallery.  The fact that he has been given his own show means that I’m not the only one.  The animation style here is obviously reminiscent of Robot Chicken, but a little less A.D.D.  And don’t even get me started on this voice cast.  Patton Oswalt is truly inspired casting and anytime you bring in Jon Hamm you can count on me to be there.  We are truly looking forward to breaking this down for you all.

Give John and Darryl a follow and catch their recaps beginning next Friday!
