The casting of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One in 2016’s Doctor Strange has long been a confusing decision as the character is Asian in the comics and Swinton, well, is not. In a new interview with Men’s Health, president of Marvel Studios, spoke of this “mistake” and explained that the intent was to avoid cliches. He added, “But it was a wake-up call to say, ‘Well, wait a minute, is there any other way to figure it out? Is there any other way to both not fall into the cliche? and cast an Asian actor?’ And the answer to that, of course, is yes.” The character has traditionally been depicted with harmful stereotypes and the move from Marvel was intended to depart from them, but it also was essentially a whitewashing. Swinton reprised her role in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
