‘Emergency’ On the Way From ‘R#J’ Director

One of the standouts for me at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was the modern-day retelling of Romeo & Juliet via cellphones in Carey Williams’ R#J. Deadline brings word that Williams is already in production on his next film, titled Emergency, starring Sabrina Carpenter, RJ Cyler, Donald Elise Watkins, and Sebastian Chacon. Described as a comedy thriller, the Amazon Studios Film centers around partying BIPOC (Blacks, Indigenous, and People of Color) college students who wrestling with calling the police after an “unusual emergency.” The story was first made into a short film that was awarded at 2018’s Sundance Film Festival and the feature film’s script was on last year’s Black List.
