Jon M. Chu To Direct Long-In-Development ‘Wicked’ Musical Film Adaptation

A Wicked musical film adaptation has been in development for years with release dates coming and going as production never got underway. Deadline now brings news that the hit Broadway tale centered on the Wicked Witch of the West is finally heading into development at Universal with Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) signed on to direct. Chu most recently delated the musical film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, heading to theaters and HBO Max this summer. From, the story’s synopsis is as follows:

Wicked, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”
