Review: Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar

BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA Del Mar (2021)

A delightfully mindless adventure in friendship that toggles somewhere between hilarious and absurd, Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar is harmless, much-need fun.

When lifelong friends Barb (Annie Mumolo) and Star (Kristen Wiig) head out for their first trip ever, their silly hijinks and relaxation gets interrupted when they meet a man (Jamie Dornan) they both have eyes for, sending them on an unforgettable (and dangerous) adventure. Mumolo and Wiig are delightfully weird and cringeworthy throughout, delivering a shtick in the ballpark of Saturday Night Live from beginning to end. While most of it is at least chuckle-worthy, it does get somewhat old about halfway through. Because the story is so out there and, in all honesty, quite dumb, you get lost in the repetitive feel in what seems like a never-ending sketch.

The redeeming elements are Mumolo, Wiig, and Dorman who each commit to the crazy and lean into their roles. Dorman in particular is absolutely playing against type here, breaking out into song at one point in one of the more entertaining sequences. A close second is the inebriated dancing to Titanic’s My Heart Will Go On.

Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar gives you exactly what you expect, sometimes a little too much of it, but always with good intentions. I laughed and had a great time, which at the end of the day is what I want from a comedy like this.

Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar is available now wherever you rent digitally.
