Weekend Estimates Update:
Open Road and Briarcliff’s The Marksman debuted in first place this weekend with respective estimated three-day and four-day grosses of $3.23 million and $3.71 million. The Liam Neeson-led action thriller directed by Robert Lorenz opened a bit ahead of consensus expectations, which had been closer to $3 million for the four-day Martin Luther King holiday frame. The four-day start of The Marksman was just ahead of the $3.61 million three-day gross of Honest Thief in its first weekend of wide release this past October. Like The Marksman, Honest Thief also starred Neeson and was released by Open Road and Briarcliff. The four-day start of The Marksman coming in just ahead of the three-day opening of Honest Thief is also noteworthy given that in playing in 1,975 locations this weekend, The Marksman was playing in 450 fewer locations than the 2,425 locations Honest Thief played in during its first weekend of wide release. For the four-day frame, The Marksman had a respectable per-location average of $1,876 (especially given that the film had a very typical showtimes per location average at many theatres).
The Marksman played especially well in the western United States this weekend, with some of the film’s top markets including Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix, Houston and Salt Lake City. The film’s highest grossing theatre was the Cinemark Pharr Town Center in Pharr, Texas (in the Brownsville-McAllen market). According to Open Road, the film’s strength in western states was due in part to The Marksman being heavily supported by Latino audiences. While critical reviews for The Marksman have been mostly negative, the film will still have a good chance of holding up well going forward due in part to the relative lack of new wide releases entering the marketplace over the next month. Honest Thief also held up nicely during its run, as that film had a total gross to opening weekend ratio of just under 4 to 1.
Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods: A New Age continued to hold up very well this weekend, as the film took in an estimated $2.04 million for the three-day frame and $2.90 million for the four-day frame. The Croods: A New Age will likely take third place for the three-day weekend and will take second place for the four-day weekend. The film’s four-day performance was up a terrific 60 percent over last weekend’s three-day gross. In addition to continuing to benefit from good critical reviews, strong word of mouth and the lack of new competition for family audiences, The Croods: A New Age received a clear boost this weekend from the Martin Luther King holiday frame. Through Monday, the 55-day total for The Croods: A New Age stands at an estimated $40.15 million, which gives the film a very healthy current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 4.13 to 1. Internationally, The Croods: A New Age grossed an estimated $2.2 million this weekend from 17 markets. That brings the film’s current international total to $94.7 million and the film’s current global total to $134.8 million.
After leading the box office for the past three weekends, Warner’s Wonder Woman 1984 fell to third place over this weekend’s four-day frame with an estimated $2.60 million. An official estimate for the film’s three-day performance hasn’t been released, but unofficially that three-day take should be in the area of $2.10 million. Wonder Woman 1984 continued to stabilize this weekend, as the film’s four-day performance was down just 13 percent from last weekend’s three-day gross. Through Monday, the 25-day total for Wonder Woman 1984 stands at $35.80 million. Internationally, Wonder Woman 1984 grossed an estimated $5.2 million this weekend from 42 markets. This weekend’s international performance was driven by the film’s estimated $2.6 million debut in Russia (including previews). Respective international and global totals for Wonder Woman 1984 stand at $105.9 million internationally and $141.7 million globally.
Universal’s News of the World and Sony’s Monster Hunter both held up very nicely this weekend. News of the World took fourth place with respective estimated three-day and four-day grosses of $1.05 million and $1.27 million, while Monster Hunter claimed fifth with respective estimated three-day and four-day grosses of $0.92 million and $1.09 million. This weekend’s four-day take for News of the World was up 3 percent over last weekend’s three-day performance and this weekend’s four-day haul for Monster Hunter was down a very slim 1 percent from last weekend. Through Monday, respective total grosses stand at $9.20 million for Monster Hunter through 32 days and at a similar $8.72 million for News of the World through 25 days.
Lionsgate’s Fatale took sixth place with respective estimated three-day and four-day grosses of $0.53 million and $0.63 million, while Focus’ Promising Young Woman followed in seventh with respective three-day and four-day grosses of $0.43 million and $0.52 million. For the four-day frame, Fatale was down a slim 4 percent from last weekend’s three-day take and Promising Young Woman declined just 9 percent. Respective total grosses through Monday stand at $4.84 million through 32 days for Fatale and at $3.43 million for Promising Young Woman through 25 days.
Meanwhile, Disney’s re-issue of 2000’s The Emperor’s New Groove started out with respective three-day and four-day estimates of $0.169 million and $0.239 million (from 744 locations). That was just ahead of 101 Studios’ The War with Grandpa (with respective three-day and four-day estimates of $0.156 million and $0.185 million) and Roadside’s Pinocchio (with respective three-day and four-day estimates of $0.141 million and $0.189 million). Through Monday, The War with Grandpa has grossed $19.27 million in 102 days and Pinocchio has grossed $1.37 million in 25 days.
