Weekend Box Office Report: December 4 – 6, 2020

Weekend Estimates Update:

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods: A New Age led the domestic box office for a second consecutive frame after taking in an estimated $4.40 million this weekend. Universal Filmed Entertainment Group has now led the domestic box office for six consecutive weekends and that streak should extend to seven weekends next weekend with The Croods: A New Age all but guaranteed to remain in first place (especially with no new wide releases currently scheduled for the frame). The Croods: A New Age declined a sizable 55 percent from last weekend’s three-day frame, which is a very typical second weekend hold for a non-holiday family film that opened over Thanksgiving weekend. With a stronger than expected twelve-day gross of $20.30 million, The Croods: A New Age is now the fourth film to pass the $20 million domestic mark since theatres re-opened back in August (joining TenetThe New Mutants and Unhinged). The Croods: A New Age played in 2,205 locations this weekend, which gave the film a solid per-location average of $1,995 for the frame.

Internationally, The Croods: A New Age took in an estimated $13.6 million from 10 international markets. The film’s international performance continued to be led by China with a weekend take of $12.2 million. The Croods: A New Age was helped out in China this weekend by Sony’s Monster Hunter being pulled from theatres on Saturday. Through Sunday, The Croods: A New Age has grossed an estimated $36.6 million in China. Additional international totals for The Croods: A New Age include $0.768 million in Saudi Arabia and $0.711 million in the U.A.E. Respective current international and global totals for The Croods: A New Age stand at $40.3 million and $60.6 million. This coming Friday (December 11) The Croods: A New Age will debut in Mexico.

Focus’ Half Brothers debuted in second place this weekend with an estimated $0.720 million. The Luke Greenfield directed buddy comedy opened in 1,369 locations this weekend, which gave the film a per-location average of $526 for the frame. Even under typical marketplace conditions, the weekend after Thanksgiving weekend typically sees some of the smallest opening weekends of the year, so it wasn’t a surprise that Half Brothers (and All My Life) opened to modest results this weekend. Poor critical reviews also didn’t help matters for Half Brothers this weekend, though the film appears to be going over better with audiences than with critics after receiving a respectable B rating on CinemaScore. Also of note this weekend is that Universal Filmed Entertainment Group claimed each of this weekend’s top four films and six of this weekend’s top eight films (the two exceptions being The War with Grandpa and unofficially the re-issue of Elf).

Universal’s Freaky was down one spot from last weekend to take third this weekend with an estimated $0.460 million. Freaky held up well this weekend, as the low-budget horror comedy was down a solid 42 percent from last weekend. This weekend’s hold was especially noteworthy given that Freaky arrived on PVOD this weekend. The 24-day total for Freaky stands at $7.74 million. Internationally, Freaky took in an estimated $0.357 million this weekend from 30 international markets. Through Sunday, respective international and global totals for Freaky stand at $5.6 million and $13.3 million. This coming Thursday (December 10) Freaky will be opening in Brazil.

Fellow Universal release All My Life debuted in fourth place with an estimated $0.350 million. The Marc Meyers directed romantic drama opened in just 970 locations, which gave All My Life a per-location average of $361 for the frame. As was the case with Half Brothers, expectations were also especially modest for All My Life heading into the weekend. In addition to playing in fewer locations than Half Brothers this weekend, All My Life appears to have been at an added disadvantage by looking like the less upbeat of the two films (especially during the holiday season). On a positive note, critical reviews for All My Life have been respectable and the film looks to be going over well with audiences who have seen the film, as All My Life received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore.

101 Studios’ The War with Grandpa declined two spots and 44 percent from last weekend to land in fifth place this weekend with an estimated $0.329 million. The War with Grandpa held up relatively well for a non-holiday family film the weekend after Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks in part to continued strong holding power; The War with Grandpa has grossed an estimated $17.63 million through 59 days. That gives the film a healthy current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 4.87 to 1. Also of note is that based on unofficial estimates, Warner and New Line’s re-issue of Elf looks to be within shouting distance of The War with Grandpa this weekend after holding up very well from last weekend.

Focus’ holdovers Come Play and Let Him Go remained close to one another with respective weekend estimates of $0.235 million and $0.215 million. Come Play held up very nicely this weekend by declining 37 percent, while Let Him Go didn’t hold up nearly as well by slowing 53 percent. Respective total grosses stand at $9.03 million for Let Him Go through 31 days and at a very similar $8.98 million for Come Play through 38 days. In addition to continuing to play in theatres, both Let Him Go and Come Play are now available on PVOD.

In other box office news, Disney’s re-issue of 20th Century’s Die Hard arrived with an estimated $0.189 million. The classic 1988 Bruce Willis-led action film played in 1,172 locations this weekend, for a per-location average of just $161 for the frame. After generating relatively solid business throughout October and most of November, Disney’s re-issue titles have clearly started to see diminishing returns the past couple weeks with Frozen and now Die Hard.
