Update: Chinese Cinemas Pull ‘Monster Hunter’ Over Perceived Racist Comment; Director Responds

Update: The film will now release in the United States a week earlier than originally planned, hitting theaters December 18th, 2020.

Though the film is still weeks away from release in the United States, Monster Hunter debuted in China this past weekend and was subsequently pulled after backlash over a 10-second scene perceived as racist towards Chinese culture. While we won’t share the line here, director Paul W.S. Anderson released a statement sharing that he is “devastated” that there was “unintentional offense.” In similar statements, stars Jin Au-Yeung and Milla Jovovich shared similar sentiments. The local distributor is working to remove the scene in question with the goal of re-releasing the film.
