In a post on Instagram earlier today (see below), actor Johnny Depp announced that he will no longer portray the wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them franchise. The news comes after a recent court decision in the United Kingdom in which Depp lost a libel case again The Sun, who had referred to him as a “wife beater.” Depp remains in a very public spat with ex-girlfriend Amber Heard over accusations of domestic abuse.

Warner Bros. confirmed the departure of Johnny Depp from the upcoming third installment of Fantastic Beasts, saying (per Variety): “Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date. Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2022.”
