Review: The Call

THE CALL (2020)

The heavyweights of modern horror unite for this fresh supernatural tale of revenge that benefits from a simple story and cohesive script. 

Lin Shaye (Insidious) and Tobin Bell (Saw) star together for the first time in The Call, accompanied by a young cast that includes Chester Rushing, Erin Sanders, Sloane Morgan Siegel, and Mike Manning. When a group of teenagers routinely torment an old woman (Shaye) in town, her passing leads to each having to confront the horrors of their pasts as the deceased woman seeks revenge from beyond the grave. Director Timothy Woodward Jr. weaves a particularly intriguing tale is straightforward in its premise, yet reaches surprising emotional depths as the film advances. The 1980s setting is especially apt as the film takes many stylistic cues from horror films of that decade, utilizing ominous lighting and quick camera movements to ratchet up the suspense. There also is subtle use of lens flares throughout that will likely please J.J. Abrams. 

Shaye and Bell are, as to be expected, perfect in their roles while Rushing and Manning play off of one another’s characters with convincing ease, Rushing being the cautious new kid with a questionable past and Manning flexing his acting range as the group’s bad boy (complete with a dangling cross earring that sells his image). All-in-all, The Call delivers what it advertises: a horror flick that should be alluring to both hardcore horror fans and scaredy-cats alike, mixing a creepy haunted house vibe with a supernatural twist. It all results in a satisfying outing from all involved.
