The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday that, beginning with the 96th Academy Awards in 2024, films will have to meet certain inclusion-related criteria in order to be eligible for best picture. Per CNN, two of the follow benchmarks must be met:
- Ensuring that at least 30% of the cast comes from underrepresented groups or are featured in significant roles;
- The same as 1, but for the film crew;
- Committing significantly to apprenticeships, internship, and developmental programs; and
- Significant representation within marketing, publicity, and distribution teams.
These standards have been adapted from the British Film Institute.
