THE WAY I SEE IT (2020)
Through stunning images captured during the highs and lows of a two-term president, White House photographer Pete Souza paints a portrait of the caliber of the person necessary to occupy the Oval Office while presenting what amounts to a love letter to the 44th President of the United States of America.
In The Way I See It, Souza guides viewers through the intimate and historic moments of President Barack Obama’s 8 years in office with biographical moments peppered in that highlight Souza’s journey and purpose as the man behind the camera. Granted unprecedented access to any and all happenings, the photographs presented exude the emotions of President Obama through every moment of his presidency. A stark contrast is shown between what was then and what is now, leaning heavily into the political beliefs of Souza and those who served in the previous administration. In recent years, Souza has taken to “throwing shade” via his Instagram account where he presents photos specifically selected to rebut President Donald Trump’s actions and behaviors, an account that has made him quite popular and more outspoken than he was ever able to be before.
Though the documentary is a bit long and seems to make its points early on, there is no denying the beauty of the moments captured in documenting the life of the top elected official in our land. While the extensive access that Souza enjoyed has not been carried forth under the new administration, The Way I See It offers a non-policy look at the more intangible qualities voters should look for in a potential president while showcasing the extensive work of Souza, a man who was always in the room and had a front row seat to history.
The Way I See It hits limited theaters on September 18th, 2020 before debuting on MSNBC Friday, October 16th, 2020 at 10pm EST.
